This week on the PGA Tour season, the TPC Scottsdale in Arizona will host a new edition of the WM Phoenix Open, promising plenty of excitement in one of the most attended tournaments of the season.
While many people will have their minds on the NFL final on Sunday, golf fans will be enjoying this event from February 6 to 9 on this par-71 course, which spans 7,261 yards.
The Phoenix Open is famous for its 16th hole, known as The Coliseum. This par three hole attracts huge crowds who cheer for great shots and boo the not-so-great ones. A hole-in-one here is met with an outpouring of enthusiasm, with fans celebrating by tossing whatever they can find into the air.
The reigning champion of this tournament is Canadian Nick Taylor, while Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia, and Phil Mickelson hold the record for most wins, each with three titles. Among the event’s records, Palmer stands out for winning three consecutive titles, while Calcavecchia and Mickelson hold the lowest total score, shooting 256 with a -28 par.

WM Phoenix Open 2025 Top Contenders
This tournament takes place between two Signature Events—the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational—but that doesn’t stop top golfers like Scottie Scheffler from making an appearance.
The world No. 1 played his first tournament of the season last week at Pebble Beach, finishing ninth, six strokes behind Rory McIlroy. He had an outstanding 2024, winning seven titles and finishing as runner-up twice in the 19 tournaments he played. His victories included a Masters title and two titles of unofficial events: a gold medal at the Olympic Games and the Hero World Challenge.
Now fully recovered from his injury, the American is among the favorites, and this tournament is no exception. He has already won the title twice, in 2022 and 2023. Last year, he finished third, three strokes behind Nick Taylor and Charley Hoffman.
Another top contender is the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama. This year, he has already won The Sentry, where he secured his 11th PGA Tour title. However, in the other three tournaments he has played, he has struggled, finishing outside the top 10 in all of them, including a 48th-place finish last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Over the past two years, he has finished outside the top 20 in this event, but he has won at this course twice, back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. On both occasions, he had to go to a playoff, first defeating Rickie Fowler and then Webb Simpson. He also came close in 2015, finishing as the runner-up.
We must also include the defending champion, Nick Taylor, in this group of favorites. The Canadian had a strong 2024, adding two more top-10 finishes alongside his Phoenix Open victory. This year, he secured his first title, winning the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Taylor finished 33rd last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but one advantage for him is his success in playoffs—three of his five career titles have come through that route. His most recent playoff victory was last month in Hawaii, where he defeated Nico Echavarría.
WM Phoenix Open 2025 Outside picks
Sepp Straka, another golfer who has already won in 2025 and will be competing this week in Arizona. The Austrian claimed victory at The American Express and then finished seventh at Pebble Beach. The last time he played in this tournament was in 2022 when he finished 66th.
Justin Thomas is one of the betting favorites. The American, who hasn’t won a title since the 2022 PGA Tour Championship, was the runner-up at The American Express, finishing two strokes behind Straka. Last year, he also secured another runner-up finish at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, along with five other top-10 finishes.
South Korean golfer Sungjae Im has played four tournaments this year, finishing third at The Sentry and fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open. He recently placed 33rd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and his best result at this course was a sixth-place finish in 2023.
