Predictions and Preview – Jaguars vs. Bengals

Last Updated on September 29, 2021 8:02 pm by Erwin Noguera

The Jacksonville Jaguars will take on the Cincinnati Bengals to kick off Week 4. The Jaguars enter this game as one of the few winless teams left in the league. New head coach Urban Meyer has been a complete disaster, and rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence hasn’t been much better. There’s plenty of time to turn things around in Jacksonville, and that could start Thursday night in Lawrence’s first prime-time appearance of his career. The Bengals are coming off a surprising win against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, a victory that tied them for first place in the AFC North. Cincinnati has looked shaky overall to start the year, but a win here could help steady the ship for head coach Zac Taylor.

Why bet on Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a bottom-third offense that has been dragged down by their aerial play. They rank 24th in yards per play (5.1) and score just 17.7 points per game. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s defense is a much-improved unit from last year, holding opposing teams to just 18 points per game and 4.5 yards per play.

It’s been a rough start to a promising career for Lawrence. His brutal pick-six late in the third quarter nearly doomed the Jaguars against the Cardinals in Week 3. Lawrence has thrown 7 interceptions, ranks 34th out of 35 qualified quarterbacks in pass completion percentage (54.2%), and has an abysmal QBR (23.3).

Why bet the Cincinnati Bengals

On the other hand, the Bengals have playmakers at all three levels. Larry Ogunjobi and Trey Hendrickson have been disruptive up front, Logan Wilson leads the NFL with 3 interceptions, and as long as Trae Waynes recovers from a hamstring injury, Cincinnati will have a legitimate top-10 defense. Eli Apple hasn’t been great in Waynes’ place, but if you’re going to have a backup as your weak link, life isn’t bad at all. Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates III make up one of the best safety combos in football.

Final betting analysis between Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals:

Jacksonville’s defense ranks among the worst in the league in total yards and points allowed. They also live at the bottom in turnover differential and struggle to get pressure on the opposing quarterback. On the other hand, I’m not saying the Bengal’s defense is elite. They’re far from it. But they are slightly better than average in the right matchup. Getting the Jaguars is the right matchup for the Bengals to show up in all phases.

Expect the Bengals to control the game. However, The final score will make it look much closer than it actually will be. Look for a late touchdown in garbage time from the Jaguars to keep this game within a score. But when all is said and done, the Bengals will come out on top.
