Day 2 of the 2024/25 MLS season is history, with some results completely expected while others were somewhat surprising. Here is the roundup of Matchday 2 of the MLS
For now, we have the “favorite” teams stepping up to the top of their respective divisions. In the East, Philadelphia, Columbus Crew, Inter Miami, and Charlotte FC have started the season very well, while in the West, SJ Earthquakes, Whitecaps, and LAFC have done the same by winning their first two matches, while the reigning champions, LA Galaxy, have lost both matches, something unexpected.
One way or another, the season has just begun, and all teams have enough time to straighten their course and start fighting for positions in their respective conferences.

The SJ Earthquakes emerged victorious with a 2-1 score against Sporting KC in the second match of the 2025 Major League Soccer season at Children’s Mercy Park.
Colombian player Cristian “Chicho” Arango opened the scoring for Bruce Arena’s side just three minutes into the game, followed by Venezuelan Joseph Martinez extending their lead in the 19th minute. The visitors had previously put on a dominant performance in their debut, securing a 4-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.
Sporting KC managed to come close with a goal from Serbia’s Dejan Joveljic, who successfully converted a penalty kick and placed the ball into the right side of the net. Despite the efforts of midfielder Manu Garcia, who made constant attempts to equalize, Sporting KC could not break through San Jose’s solid defensive lines in the first half.
Sporting KC had faced a series of setbacks in the previous weeks, including elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Inter Miami and a shaky start to the season with a loss to visiting Austin FC.

LAFC’s victory over NYC FC at BMO Stadium not only solidified their perfect start to the 2025 MLS season but also showcased their resilience and determination on the field.
Ryan Hollingshead’s decisive goal in the 86th minute highlighted their ability to capitalize on critical moments, securing their third straight win in all competitions, each with a narrow 1-0 victory.
As the match neared a possible draw, Hollingshead’s quick thinking and precise execution following a defensive error turned the result in LAFC’s favor. His powerful right-footed volley from close range electrified the crowd and ultimately proved to be the game-winning strike that secured another three points for the Black & Gold.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris played a pivotal role in keeping LAFC defensively solid with three crucial saves. Lloris’ exceptional performance not only marked his second consecutive clean sheet in the MLS season opener but also extended his impressive streak to three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, underscoring his reliability and instrumental contribution to LAFC’s recent winning streak.

BC Place.
In the new Liga Principal de Futebol (MLS) season, the Vancouver Whitecaps added to the LA Galaxy’s problems by continuing without a victory. Ecuadorian player Pedro Vite played a decisive role in the 1-2 loss to the Canadian team.
The match at BC Place got off to a rough start for the LA Galaxy. Sam Adekugbe took advantage of a ball thrown into the middle of the box, scoring uncontested with one touch just 2 minutes into the game to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead. Despite the visitors’ efforts to equalize, Gabriel Pec managed to level the score near the end of the first half.
The second half was predominantly dominated by the home team, with more possession (51%) and scoring opportunities. In the 87th minute, Brian White connected with an excellent left-footed cross from Vite to secure a header and secure the 3 points for Vancouver, marking their third consecutive win in all competitions.
Having previously excelled in the season opener with a 4-1 win over Joao Ortiz’s Portland Timbers, Vite once again showed his scoring prowess, finding the back of the net for the second time this season.

Inter Miami took on the Houston Dynamo in a match that could be summed up as “no Messi, no problem.” Starting with an early goal from Venezuelan Telasco Segovia, who had an outstanding performance, Inter took the lead early on.
Throughout the first half, Houston showed signs of potentially leveling the score, but just when it looked like the home team might pull one back, Tadeo Allende scored with a goal at a precise angle to make the score 2-0.
Shortly before halftime, showing his exceptional form, Telasco Segovia, operating in a forward position, expertly placed the ball inside the keeper’s near post, sealing a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break.
“Old rags,” as Luis described it, the Uruguayan player seized the opportunity from 25 yards out and confidently executed a goal against Houston before being substituted. Lodeiro would later score a consolation goal for Houston.
After the conclusion of the match, in a surprising turn of events, Ian Fray was sent off and is set to serve a suspension of at least one game after being caught grabbing an opponent by the neck.
