This weekend marks the penultimate Grand Prix of the year, the Qatar GP. With Max Verstappen already crowned as the Formula 1 champion, the spotlight will shift to the battle for the Constructors’ Championship.
McLaren leads the standings with 608 points, but Ferrari made significant gains in Las Vegas, cutting the gap to just 24 points. It’s highly likely that this battle will continue until the final race of the season.
It’s worth noting that this weekend features a sprint race on Saturday, followed by the main qualifying session.
Last year’s winner of this race was Verstappen, while Lewis Hamilton claimed victory in 2021, making them the only two winners of this Grand Prix because 2022wasn’t disputed. The race will consist of 57 laps, covering a total distance of 191.762 miles.

2024 Qatar GP Top Contenders
Lando Norris was the standout driver of this season, challenging Max Verstappen for the title up until the past race. While he couldn’t clinch the championship, the British driver gained valuable experience for the future, particularly as McLaren continues improving as it did in 2024.
Although his recent performances included two sixth-place finishes, Norris showed strong form in the sprint race qualifying, securing first place in all three shootouts. He even won the sprint race and achieved pole position in São Paulo, though he still needs to work on his race starts.
Among the contenders, we must include the most recent winner, George Russell, who has also benefited from the improvements in the Mercedes W15. The team secured a 1-2 finish in Las Vegas. Russell also performed well in the sprint shootouts, with a third-place finish in the first and second places in the other two.
And, of course, we can’t overlook the current Formula 1 champion, Max Verstappen. After securing the title in the United States, the Dutch driver eased some of the pressure off his shoulders, especially since the RB20 underperformed in the latter half of the season. This allowed Norris to close the gap, though his form eventually dropped, leaving Verstappen a clear path to victory.
Verstappen won in Brazil, ending a 10-race winless streak, but finished fifth in Las Vegas, behind the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers. He will aim to help Red Bull win the Constructors’ Championship but cannot do it alone. He’ll need the support of Sergio Pérez, who has been a major disappointment this year. Red Bull currently sits third, 53 points behind McLaren.
2024 Qatar GP Outside picks
Lewis Hamilton faces his final two races with Mercedes and wants to end his tenure by winning as much as possible. This year, he has already secured two victories and recently finished second in Las Vegas. Back in 2021, he won this race and posted solid times in the sprint shootout.
Now, let’s talk about Ferrari’s two drivers. The Italian team has had a rollercoaster season, plagued by mistakes and an unreliable car that has hurt their chances in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
In the last ten races, Charles Leclerc has consistently finished in the top five, claiming two victories and six podiums. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz, who will leave Ferrari at the end of the year, secured a podium in Las Vegas. Both drivers performed well in the sprint shootout, with the Spaniard qualifying fourth and the Monegasque fifth.
