2025 Valero Texas Open Top Contenders
One of the favorites to win this year’s Valero Texas Open is Ludvig Åberg. The Swedish golfer is the highest-ranked participant and has already claimed a title in 2025, winning The Genesis Invitational—his second PGA Tour victory after the 2023 RSM Classic.
This year, he also secured a fifth-place finish at The Sentry, but aside from those two performances, his results haven’t been as strong. His most recent tournament was THE PLAYERS Championship, where he missed the cut, and before that, he finished 22nd at the Arnold Invitational. Last year, he placed 14th in this tournament, while in 2022, he failed to make the cut.
Another strong contender is Hideki Matsuyama. The Japanese golfer is also a tournament winner this year, claiming victory at The Sentry in early January. Since then, he hasn’t delivered standout performances, with his best finishes being 16th at the Sony Open in Hawaii and 13th at The Genesis Invitational.
His last appearance was at THE PLAYERS Championship, where he missed the cut, but last year at this very course, he finished seventh. In 2024, he won two titles, a number he hopes to surpass in 2025.
A golfer in great form and seeking his first PGA Tour title is Tommy Fleetwood. The 34-year-old Englishman finished fifth at The Genesis Invitational, marking his best performance this year.
Fleetwood has played five tournaments in 2025, finishing in the top 25 in all of them, with his worst result being 22nd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has played the Valero Texas Open only once, in 2024, where he finished seventh.
2025 Valero Texas Open Outside picks
The defending champion wants to keep his crown. Akshay Bhatia, the 2024 champion, is having a strong 2025 and is close to securing the third title of his career. He finished third at THE PLAYERS Championship, just two strokes behind Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun, and has recorded two other top-10 finishes this year.
But Bhatia isn’t the only one aiming for another title. Canadian golfer Corey Conners, the 2019 and 2023 winner of this tournament, wants to join Arnold Palmer and Justin Leonard as the only three-time champions. Those two victories remain the only titles of the 33-year-old’s career. In 2025, he has already secured four top-10 finishes, including his last three tournaments, with his best result being a third-place finish at the Arnold Invitational.
Lastly, we must include Patrick Cantlay. The eight-time tournament winner, whose last victory came in 2022, has shown solid form this year. The 33-year-old American finished fifth at The American Express and The Genesis Invitational and placed 12th at THE PLAYERS Championship. However, this will be his first time competing in the Valero Texas Open.
