Let’s get started with some simple tips to get started and how to bet on NFL Football games, NFL betting strategy, NFL spreads and Moneylines. Â Â
We’ll start with some basics about how NFL bets work so that by the time you finish you’ll know what you need to know about being successful betting on NFL Football.
NFL football wagers are very similar to college football wagers, just fewer games and larger point spreads. There are three ways of making nfl bets: traditional or Moneyline bets, Teasers and Buying Points which is best explained below.
How to Bet NFL Football – Traditional Bets
The most common way of betting the NFL is by placing a Moneyline or traditional bet. This is simply when you pick the winner of each game based on what you think the outcome will be. So if NFL team A is playing NFL team B, then NFL team A will win if they score more points than NFL team B.
The Moneyline in NFL betting is straightforward, although it can be confused with point spread bets in some cases, so here’s an example to help explain how it works:
NFL Football Game A
Â
NFL Team A on the Moneyline is priced at -170. What that means is you’ll have to bet $170 to win $100 on NFL Team A winning.
NFL Team B, on the other hand, is a +140 underdog which means you’ll earn $140 for every $100 bet on Team B.
Those are pretty much all there is to traditional NFL Football betting but there are some more complex wagers as well including parlays, future bets and proposition wagers.

Decimal odds offer several advantages over American odds, making them a preferred choice for many bettors, especially outside the United States:
Overall, decimal odds provide a clear, easy-to-use system that simplifies the betting process, making them particularly appealing to both novice and experienced bettors.
To read and interpret NFL betting lines using decimal odds, follow these steps:
Decimal odds, also known as European odds, represent the total payout you would receive on a winning bet, including your original stake. They are expressed as a decimal number, such as 1.50 or 2.75.
To calculate your potential payout with decimal odds, use the formula:
Example 1: If you bet $100 on a team with decimal odds of 1.80, your total payout would be:
Your profit would be $80, as the payout includes your original $100 stake.
Example 2: If you wager $50 on a team with odds of 2.50, the payout would be:
Here, your profit would be $75, plus the return of your $50 stake.
Interpreting Decimal Odds
Odds Greater Than 2.00: These indicate that the potential return is greater than your stake, suggesting the team is an underdog.
Odds Less Than 2.00: These suggest that the potential return is less than your stake, indicating the team is a favorite.
Implied Probability
Decimal odds can also be used to calculate the implied probability of an outcome occurring, using the formula:
Implied Probability = 1/Decimal Odds
Example: For decimal odds of 2.50, the implied probability is:
This means there is a 40% implied chance of the event happening.
Decimal odds provide a straightforward way to understand potential returns and probabilities, making them popular in many parts of the world for their simplicity and ease of use[1][2][4].
To read and interpret NFL betting lines that use American odds, it’s essential to understand how these odds are presented and what they mean:
Positive Odds (+): These indicate how much profit you would make on a $100 bet. For example, if the odds are +300, a $100 bet would yield a $300 profit if successful, plus the return of your original $100 stake, totaling $400.
Negative Odds (-): These show how much you need to wager to win $100. For instance, if the odds are -200, you would need to bet $200 to win $100. If your bet wins, you receive $100 in profit plus your original $200 stake, totaling $300.
Favorites and Underdogs: Negative odds are typically associated with favorites, indicating a higher probability of winning but offering lower returns. Positive odds are linked to underdogs, suggesting a lower probability of winning but higher potential payouts.
Risk vs. Reward: Betting on favorites (negative odds) is generally seen as less risky but offers smaller profits. Conversely, betting on underdogs (positive odds) is riskier but can result in larger payouts if successful.
Let’s consider an NFL game where the New England Patriots are listed at -150, and the Miami Dolphins are at +130:
Patriots (-150): You must bet $150 to win $100. If the Patriots win, you gain $100 in profit and get back your $150 stake, totaling $250.
Dolphins (+130): A $100 bet would win you $130. If the Dolphins win, you earn $130 in profit and get back your $100 stake, totaling $230.
Understanding these concepts allows NFL sports bettors to make informed decisions based on their risk tolerance and the potential rewards of each bet.
Every NFL franchise team plays 17 regular season games. Sixteen of these games are against teams from within their conference, and the seventeenth game is versus a non-conference team from a division that the team is not scheduled to play. This game is scheduled based on division ranking from the previous season.
In 2007, the NFL added an International Series to its scheduling, meaning that every franchise is guaranteed to play abroad at least once every eight years. As a result of international scheduling, the 2022 season saw three games played in London, one in Munich, and one in Mexico City.
NFL teams can volunteer to play one of their home games abroad if they wish.
Following the end of the regular season schedule, seven teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs, meaning that 14 teams compete in the playoffs. The number one ranked teams from the regular season will get a bye, meaning they don’t have to participate in the wild-card round.
After that, the teams remaining in the playoffs compete in a knockout format until only two remain, one from the NFC and one from the AFC. The two final teams compete for the Super Bowl, perhaps the single-biggest event in American sports.
The winning team is awarded the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy and cements its place in American sporting history.
The primary difference between a sportsbook and a betting exchange lies in the way bets are placed and managed:
Model: In a sportsbook, bettors place their wagers against the bookmaker, who sets the odds for each event. The sportsbook takes on the risk of the bet and profits from the “vig” or “juice,” which is a percentage added to the odds to ensure a profit margin.
Odds Setting: The sportsbook determines the odds, and bettors can only choose to back those odds. The odds are typically set to ensure the sportsbook makes a profit regardless of the outcome.\
Promotions: Sportsbooks often offer promotions, bonuses, and incentives to attract bettors, such as free bets and odds boosts.
Convenience: They provide a straightforward betting experience, making them more accessible to novice bettors. Sportsbooks offer a wide range of bet types, including parlays and futures, all in one place.
Model: A betting exchange is a marketplace where bettors wager against each other rather than against a bookmaker. The exchange facilitates these bets and charges a commission on winning bets.
Odds Setting: Bettors on an exchange can set their own odds, acting as both the backer and the layer. This often results in better odds compared to sportsbooks since the market is driven by supply and demand among bettors.
Flexibility: Exchanges allow bettors to “lay” bets, meaning they can bet on an outcome not occurring, effectively taking the role of a bookmaker. This provides more flexibility and opportunities for strategic betting.
Limitations: Betting exchanges may have limitations in terms of liquidity, especially for less popular events, which can make it harder to match bets. They also typically offer fewer promotions compared to sportsbooks.
Sportsbooks offer a more traditional betting experience with set odds and promotions, while betting exchanges provide a platform for peer-to-peer betting with potentially better odds and more flexibility in terms of betting options.

The NFL also utilizes “flexible scheduling” to ensure that the most exciting and meaningful games are available to the largest audience, particularly in the latter part of the season.
A prop (or porosition) bet is a wager on a game not directly tied to the actual outcome of the contest. There are props that have to do with a game as a whole, as well as on the performance of the teams involved.
NFL betting results are based on the results and statistics provided by the league’s governing body (www.nfl.com).
