In the fourth round, Jorge Masvidal had to take refuge in the cage because he was badly beaten by Covington. Immediately afterward, the Miami man loosened Colby Covington’s legs with tremendous crochet. The bad blood between the two was reflected at the end of that round. The two exchanged glances and we watched as sparks flew in the octagon at UFC 272. There were five minutes left, but again the more cerebral Colby came out. He slept the fight, dominated, and took the victory by unanimous decision (49-46, 50-44, and 50-45).
The number 1 in the welterweight ranking had been better and only that hand made him fear for his victory. He was the better fighter and a fair winner.
First Strikes
The first round of the fight showed the tension that these two fighters have since they did not even greet each other at the end.
The two came out with a point of pause, especially Covington. Colby took the fight to wrestle as soon as he could. There he dominated with his elbows and tried several times to subdue his opponent. It could never end like this, but the threat scored and made Mavidal uncomfortable. The man from Florida took notice in the second round, so he left the fight standing. There were exchanges and the fight was even. Covington finished better, but the doubt in the judges was clear.
In the third act, Covington dominated again, and in the fourth, a very good crossover. There Colby lost his measure for a moment, he began to exchange blows. At first, it was good for him, and in a few seconds, he was brushing the canvas with his knee. The work he had done saved him because Masvidal lacked the drive to go after him. Already in the fifth, Covington came out aggressive. He took the fight under control with his wrestling and did not get impatient. He had the fight in his hand and did not let it escape. His happy face was clear. Meanwhile, Masvidal’s face showed his disappointment. He wanted to finish off his opponent, but he looked completely barren.
Last Moments of the Fight
With the cards in his favor, Colby handled the last round with pleasure and the judges did not hesitate to give him a victory by unanimous decision (49-46, 50-44, and 50-45), which continues to line him up among the main contenders to aim again for a title shot.
