It was a dream final. Two of the best teams were facing each other at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. England, who although they had not played well, had been the main contenders since before the start of the tournament. After losing the final at the last European Championship, they were confident that this was their moment to win their first title.

On the other hand, Spain was the opposite case. They arrived at the tournament sowing doubts, but as the matches went by, they became the favorites due to their style of play.

On the English side, Gareth Southgate gave the starting lineup to Luke Shaw, looking for greater defensive solidity. On the Spanish side, Dani Olmo was going to replace the injured Pedri, and he was going to be decisive as he was one of the best players of the champion.

First Half

The first half was boring. As it usually happens in finals, nobody wants to make a mistake, and they were very cautious with few opportunities. The one who tried the most was Nico Williams, who had a great tournament and was looking for his consecration in the German capital.

The only serious chance in the first 45 minutes was a shot by Phil Foden that was just wide of the post and was well saved by goalkeeper Unai Simón. In the second half, the excitement began to build.

Second Half

And the first surprise or blow came before the game was restarted. Rodri had a collision with his teammate Robin Le Normand at the end of the first half and was injured. So much so that he had to come off before the second half, giving way to Martin Zubimendi. It was a hard blow for Luis De La Fuente, as he lost his orchestra conductor.

However, in one of the first plays, the goal came. A great three-finger pass from Carvajal to Lamine Yamal and the 17-year-old ran inside and opened it up for Williams, who arrived alone on the left and shot low and cross to make it 1-0 at 47′.

Spain continued to attack and had chances to increase the lead, but failed. Olmo, Yamal, Oyarzabal… They all tried but had no luck, leaving England alive.

With pure heart, the English went in search of an equalizer and got it in the 73rd minute. Bukayo Saka went down the right andpassed to Jude Bellingham, who saw that Cole Palmer was entering alone and facing the goal, so he put it back, and the Chelsea player opened his foot to place it in the far post of Unai Simon.

The goal motivated the Lions to go for the win, and they were pressing but did not take advantage of those 10 minutes of extra motivation, and as soon as they let their guard down, the stab came.

A ball was pivoted by Mikel Oyarzabal in three-quarters of the pitch and the Basque player opened up with Cucurella and ran into the box to find the full-back’s cross and slid to finish and send the ball into the back of the net, in a goal that was reviewed by the VAR and was valid by just a few centimeters.

Spain then closed in at the back to defend the score, but England almost equalized after a corner kick, Declan Rice headed hard, and Unai managed to save, but the rebound fell to Saka, who also tried to head it, and on the line was Dani Olmo to reject the ball and celebrate it as a goal. That was the end of their hopes.

Spain vs. England Conclusion

It was a fair 2-1 for Spain, who were better than their opponents, not just on Sunday, but throughout the UEFA EURO 2024. Although it was said that they lacked a Center Forward at a good level, they managed to put together a great offensive team with Morata, Williams, and Yamal, the latter two who are the present and future of the national team and who won individual awards in this final.

On the other hand, the English team, who had been lucky throughout the tournament, scored goals in the last minutes or seconds that gave them the qualification. Great generation of the British, but they have not been able to round it off with a title, and Harry Kane is still unable to lift a trophy, neither at club level nor with the National Team.
