Champions League Quarterfinals Second Leg Preview

Champions League Quarterfinals Second Leg Preview

Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg

The Champions League quarterfinals first leg gifted us with many remarkable matches, but in the end, the existing differences are short. Just two teams managed to win, and the goal difference is only one goal, so everything could change in seconds.

We have to point out that the only major surprise was the victory of Barcelona in the Parc des Princes, as all the other results were more or less expected. What is true is that the local teams have a massive advantage in their favor for this second leg, so we are yet to see who can make a profit from it.

Barcelona had a shaky first part of the season, to the point that Xavi Hernández had to announce his departure at the end of the campaign to calm the waters. The league title was nothing more than a dream, and in the Champions League, they were close to finishing second in the group stage.

However, it seems that the team mentality changed after the coach’s announcement and now they come to the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals with an advantage after a massive win in Paris.

PSG seems to have improved after the breakoff of their massive attacking trio last summer. The Parisians slowly built a solid season and managed to survive the group of death. They finished second again, which had been their doom in recent seasons, but they had luck this time and landed an average rival like Real Sociedad. They passed easily but now have to turn things around after losing a massive chance to make a statement at their home stadium in this quarterfinals.

Dortmund has had a hard time this season in the league, with their participation in the next edition of the Champions League hanging in the line after a series of poor results. However, they have something to cheer about: their level in this edition of the premier European competition.

They survived the group of dead landing the first place and, in the round of 16, had a relaxed time against PSV. Now, they must face their Beste Noire of the last years: the quarterfinals, a stage they have not passed since 2013. Things didn’t start quite well, but at least they’ll define at home.

Atlético Madrid had a similar performance in the league than Dortmund. In that context, with the domestic title far from possible, they had been pointing their weapons to the Champions League, and things have resulted quite well. They were the protagonists of the surprise of the season after eliminating the all-mighty Inter.

Now, with advantage, they seem to have everything in their favor to go through. However, there are some things we must consider, and one is that they have been terrible visitors this season in all competitions.  They have played 22 games in this condition, losing ten times and tying the other five, so their effectiveness is under 40%.

Champions League Quarterfinals Second Leg: Bayern vs. Arsenal

Bayern is in a low mood as their nightmare has been confirmed: they are no longer undisputed Bundesliga champions. The only title they had almost assured at the start of every season is no more, and Leverkusen celebrated with their people their first title in 120 years of history as a club.

On a positive note, the team’s offensive power remains the same, and Harry Kane is especially dangerous when he plays against Arsenal. He was close to giving the win to his new team in the first leg until Trossard’s equalizer settled things.

If Bayern is in a low mood, the same can be said about the Gunners. The last few days were crucial for their season, as after taking the lead from Liverpool in the Premier League and having to receive a Bayern in poor form, they had everything in their hands to reaffirm their good moment.

It’s fair to say they didn’t do so, crashing down to earth against Aston Villa today and surrendering the first place to Manchester City. They also failed to take advantage in London, so they have to visit the Allianz needing to win.

Manchester City may be the best team in the world, and they are well-railed to accomplish a feat never seen in the world’s football first level: a double treble. Now, we must point out that no team has made Real Madrid such a heavy underdog in recent memory.

They shouldn’t be overconfident, as if there is a team that can stop them on their horses even at the Etihad is the Casa Blanca. Whatever the case, they are the favorites for this game and to raise the title again.

Real Madrid didn’t take the chance to achieve, at least, a slim advantage at their home. We cannot say they didn’t try, with all the stadium roof thing and their forwards being relentless in the absence of Walker. However, it’s not entirely on their foul; they faced a team that for some time seemed to have a magic hat ready for hard times, and this time, they pulled out three great goals. Especially remarkable was the one by Gvardiol, the first in his City career.

The only sensible absentee for Los Merengues, apart from Courtois, will be Tchouaméni, who is suspended after receiving a yellow card in the first leg.
