champions league

The matchday 4 of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League season is already history, and we enjoyed some spectacular matches and, above all, some really interesting surprises.

We are talking, first of all, about Real Madrid’s 1-3 defeat against AC Milan. There is no doubt that Milan came into this match as underdogs, but they took advantage of Los Blancos’ terrible performance to take a stupendous away win.

On the other hand, Manchester City was also surprised in its visit to Lisbon, being annihilated by Sporting with a score of 1-4. This defeat is the first time in over five years that Pep Guardiola has lost three consecutive games in charge of a team.

As we can see, the new Champions League format is taking its toll on the teams. While many do not like this new scheme, there is much more competition to define the best European team.

Below, we bring you the summary of what happened in the most interesting matches of the UEFA Champions League matchday 4.

We start this summary with AC Milan’s surprising victory at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium against Real Madrid with a score of 3-1. Los Blancos have been playing poorly in recent weeks and come from conceding seven goals in their last two home games.

Milan took full advantage of Real Madrid’s wobble to take the three away points. It all started with an excellent pace of play by the Italians, who took the lead in the 12th minute with Malick Thiaw’s goal.

Then, 11 minutes later, Real Madrid was able to equalize after a goal by Vinicius Jr. through a penalty. However, six minutes before the end of the first half, Alvaro Morata scored 2-1 to send Milan with a partial victory at halftime.

In the second half, Real Madrid couldn’t do much against the Italian’s fierce defense, so much so that, in a new oversight, the Rossoneri managed to score the definitive 3-1 in the 73rd minute at the feet of Tijjani Reijnders, to take three golden points away from home.

Result: Real Madrid (1) – (3) Milan

The other surprise of the day was the terrible defeat of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City against Sporting Lisbon with a score of 1-4. The Citizens dominated the match in possession and had many clear goal-scoring chances, but were unable to overcome the fierce defense of the Portuguese.

City started the match extremely well, as they scored the first goal in the 4th minute through Phil Foden. However, this was the only positive thing that Manchester City had in this match.

In the 38th minute, Viktor Gyökeres scored Sporting’s first goal to level the score and go into the break with confidence.

At the start of the second half, Maximiliano Arauj (’46), managed to score the 2-1 for Sporting, giving a big blow to the Citizens at this moment. Then, Gyökeres converted a penalty in the 49th minute to put the Portuguese 3-1 ahead.

Finally, in the 80th minute, Gyökeres converted again from the penalty spot to ratify Sporting Lisbon’s 4-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Result: Sporting (4) – (1) Manchester City

Atletico Madrid stormed the Parc des Princes last Wednesday with a stupendous 2-1 victory to take a much-needed breath of fresh air in this Champions League.

The Spanish club showed its ability to react in this match and, above all, their resilience even though they were infinitely outplayed by PSG in the 90 minutes. They even had only three direct shots on goal, while the Parisians generated 22 scoring chances with nine shots on goal.

PSG started the match very well with a goal by Warren Zaïre-Emery in the 14th minute. However, Atleti reacted immediately and, four minutes later, equalized thanks to a goal by Nahuel Molina.

The locals then went on the attack, creating chances left and right, but Atletico Madrid’s defense and goalkeeper were up to the task. Finally, when everyone thought the match was completely over, Angel Correa in the 90+3′ minute scored the winning goal for Atletico Madrid to leave Paris with the three points.

Finally, Inter managed to make the San Siro Stadium stand out and took a narrow victory over Arsenal with a score of 1-0.

Arsenal had 20 scoring chances and 63% possession. However, they were unable to overcome Inter’s tight defense.

The game was always in favor of the Gunners, especially in the first half, where Inter looked like they were playing away from home. However, in the 45+3′ minute, a foul inside Arsenal’s box gave the Italians the chance to take a penalty to go ahead on the scoreboard. In the end, Hakan Çalhanoglu scored the only goal of the match to give Inter the victory.

In the second half, Arsenal also had several chances to score, but they were denied by Inter’s defense and goalkeeper.

Result: Inter (1) – (0) Arsenal
