Canadian Open National Bank

The 2024 Canadian Open championship (branded as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers for sponsorship reasons) is a pair of outdoor hard-court tennis tournaments to be played from August 6–12, 2024.

The men’s tournament will take place at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, and the women’s event will take place at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.

It will be the 134th edition of the men’s tournament—a mandatory Masters 1000 event on the 2024 ATP Tour, and the 122nd edition of the women’s tournament—a mandatory WTA 1000 event on the 2024 WTA Tour.

Male Singles

Gold medalist Novak Djokovic and silver medalist Carlos Alcaraz have already withdrawn from the Montreal Masters, so the field is a bit depleted. Bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti is also absent.

Those participating could be dealing with fatigue on the heels of a heavy workload on both grass and clay–such as Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner is well rested after missing the Paris Olympics because of tonsillitis.

After dominating the first few months of 2024, Sinner has been left out of the party a bit in recent weeks. Nonetheless, Sinner is still No. 1 in the world and will be eager to cement his status as such from now through the U.S. Open.

He is without question the best player in this field, so it should not matter that his draw is somewhat difficult. A red-hot Paul looms as a potential quarterfinal foe, and before that, there are some talented possible third-round opponents in the form of Alejandro Tabilo, Frances Tiafoe, and Tallon Griekspoor. The top half of the bracket also features Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Female Singles

Gaby Dabrowski comes into her home WTA event after winning Canada’s second-ever Olympic medal in tennis, while American Coco Gauff is the No. 1 seed in the singles draw as the tour shifts to Toronto.

The National Bank Open begins this week at Sobeys Stadium, and with a handful of players who were in action at the Olympics just days ago — though among the recent withdrawals from the field are the Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medallists in women’s singles, which includes the world No. 1, Iga Swiatek.

The Canadian contingent in the NBO singles draw is headlined by Leylah Fernandez, the country’s top-ranked woman at No. 25, and Bianca Andreescu, who became the first Canadian in 50 years to win this tournament, back in 2019.

After Swiatek’s withdrawal, reigning US Open champion Gauff is the top player in the singles draw.

American Jessica Pegula won the NBO a year ago in Montreal, and the 30-year-old from Buffalo will be trying to do what no player has done in this tournament in more than two decades: Defend her title.
