The Bad Boy of Surfing: Filipe Toledo

The Bad Boy of Surfing: Filipe Toledo

Filipe Toledo is a Brazilian professional surfer born on April 16, 1995, in Ubatuba, a small-town northeast of São Paulo, Brazil, and currently resides with his family in San Clemente, California, since 2015.

Toledo is a second-generation professional that I believe in the coasts of Ubatuba, BrazilFilipe’s father, Ricardo, was also a surfer and was a national champion at home tournaments. In 2014, when his career grew significantly, he convinced his entire family to move to California. Today, Filipe’s wife and baby are his main pillars and excellent hosts of his legendary barbecues in the backyard of his beautiful home.

According to Filipe’s colleagues and friends, he has only one impediment to achieving the dream of being a world champion, and that is his volatility.

Filipe Toledo on the Championship Tour

Filipe has competed in the World Surf League Men’s World Tour since 2013. The year 2014, being the best of his career, ended with a showcase full of trophies obtained in some WQS events. That year, Toledo became the absolute champion of the WQS.

In 2015, Filipe had another great year, in which he managed to get his first 3 victories on the Championship Tour, and the most impressive thing about this feat for Toledo was that he managed to obtain a perfect score of 10 in each of the finals in the ones that competed. In 2015, Toledo was the surfer who won the most WCT events, but this was not enough for him, and he finished the year in the number 4 position in the world.

His characteristics as a risky surfer make him very vulnerable to injury; in 2016, he was left out of two events due to injury. Another of his problems has been his behavior. Due to a series of mistakes made, in 2017, he was suspended from an event for arguing with the judges after a competition.

The year 2019 was also in style, as he came to compete for the world championship in Pipeline, but it was not enough, and he managed to arrive again in 4th place.

Filipe Toledo represents surf lovers, a spearhead in today’s so-called progressive surfing. He is a surfer of small stature but with an enormous capacity to perform different aggressive and very dangerous movements, especially in the aerial field. This bold and exciting approach has earned him 8 victories in the CT world championship.
