After exactly 100 years, in which the first edition took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1921, the UCI Road World Championships returns to the so-called heart of Europe: the Flanders region, located in Belgium. It will be played from this September 19 to 26, 2021.
Bordering the North Sea to the west of the region, Flanders is located between the Netherlands and France. So, its native language is Dutch, and it is the gateway to the European continent.
This will be the 94th edition of the World Road Championships. In this very important event, 11 rainbow shirts will be at stake.
The races will be held in the 4 most important cities, Knokke-Heist, Bruges, Antwerp, and Leuven. Due to the pandemic generated by the Coronavirus, in the last edition, the youth or sub-23 championships were not disputed, but this will be completely different, and all categories are included in the calendar.
This edition is the 9th to be held on Belgian territory and the 6th time that Flanders has hosted.

UCI Road World Championships: How will the race be
The UCI Road World Championships will start the actions on the beach in the city of Knokke-Heist, where 140 children, aged between 12 – 18 years (from the 70 clubs affiliated with Cycling Flanders) will race against the clock to the heart of the city of Brujas. This same route will be done by adult runners. The race will be held on a circuit with very flat characteristics, and it has extremely long routes, where the wind will be the main factor that can influence the competition.
Now, the main races of this event, the road races, will take place between the cities of Antwerp and Leuven. The start will be in Antwerp, specifically in the Grote Markt, then the race will continue through Flemish Brabant. When the cyclists are approaching the city of Leuven, they will have a very difficult challenge; that is, 2 sections of the circuit are very complicated: the Smeysberg (Huldenberg) and the Moskesstraat (Overijse), which are ascending sections that, speaking popularly, will break cyclists’ calves.
Finally, in the last sprint reaching the goal, they will have a section of 800 meters. In that part, after the fatigue of the hills, we will see how much energy each cyclist has left to give until the end in Parkpoort, Leuven.
