Premier League Matchday 16 – Roundup and Results

The Premier League has already played its matchday 16 and this only means that it is now official that the league enters the break due to the Qatar 2022 World Cup which, as we all know, starts next Sunday, November 20, 2022.

In this matchday 16, many interesting things happened, starting with the unexpected defeat of Manchester City against Brentford at home, something that was not in anyone’s plans, not even the visiting team. This leaves the Citizens now 5 points behind the inspired Arsenal who continue to win every game they play.

Newcastle is still in excellent form this season and has now gone 10 consecutive Premier League games without defeat, the last 5 of which have been victories. With this, Newcastle moved just 2 points behind Manchester City in the table.

Tottenham got back to winning ways and continues to chase Newcastle and Manchester City in fourth place. Before Cristiano Ronaldo’s strong statements towards Manchester United and his teammates, United achieved a great victory on matchday 16 to consolidate 5th place in the table.

Liverpool, with its second consecutive victory, took advantage of Brighton’s defeat to climb to sixth place in the table and now has 22 points. Meanwhile, Chelsea fell again and continues to lose positions in the table.

A big surprise in the Premier League before the World Cup break. Manchester City has been surprised this Saturday by Brentford and has fallen with a score of 1-2 at the Etihad Stadium. With this defeat, Pep Guardiola’s team is out of chances to overtake Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on matchday 16, so the Gunners will remain leaders even a week after the World Cup.

Brentford managed to take the lead thanks to a goal by Ivan Toney in the 16th minute, with the England striker, who has been left out of Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup, vindicated in this match.

Not even Haaland could put things back together for Manchester City who was heavily outplayed by Brentford on the day.

Despite this, Phil Foden, who will indeed be in Qatar with England, equalized after a cross from Kevin De Bruyne in the 45+1 minute of the first half. With this, it was believed that the Citizens would be much more accurate and lethal in the second half of the match.

Although City went on the attack and managed to create many scoring opportunities, they lacked the effectiveness needed to score the winning goal.

When the game seemed doomed to a draw, a spectacular counter-attack finished again by Ivan Toney left Manchester City frozen and gave Brentford the victory in the 90+8th minute.

With this result, Manchester City moved 5 points behind Arsenal, while Brentford gained 3 golden points and climbed to 10th place in the table.

Result: Manchester City (1) – (2) Brentford

In what was a great game, Tottenham achieved an extraordinary victory with a score of 4-3 against Leeds with a comeback in less than two minutes with goals from Rodrigo Bentancur on the last matchday of the Premier League, before the World Cup break.

Antonio Conte’s side went 3 goals down in this match and managed to come back on each of these opportunities to claim a big win and go into the break with a good taste in their mouths.

Without Son, Kulusevski and Richarlison escorted Kane in Tottenham’s offense, while for the visitors, Spaniard Rodrigo Moreno and Crysencio Summerville shared the offensive responsibilities for Leeds.

In the 10th minute of the match, Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring with a great goal, the first time a Leeds player has scored goals in four consecutive Premier Leagues matches since Australian Mark Viduka did it in 2004.

This goal woke Tottenham up, and they poured forward and were close to equalizing twice through Emerson Royal. It was not until the 25th minute when Harry Kane scored the 1-1 that gave the home side some peace of mind.

Rodrigo Moreno gave Leeds the lead just before the break, specifically in the 43rd minute.

The start of the second half was marked by an excellent goal by Ben Davies to level the score at 2-2 in the 51st minute. Once again, the game was back to square one and Tottenham were still confident of scoring their third goal of the night.

In the 76th minute, Rodrigo Moreno scored his second goal of the night to make the score 3-2 in favor of Leeds. Everything seemed to indicate that the visiting team would now close in defense to preserve the result.

But they did not count on an offensive flurry from Rodrigo Betancur, who scored two consecutive goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes to give Tottenham the victory.

With this result, Tottenham remains in fourth place in the table, just one point behind Newcastle. Meanwhile, Leeds cut short their streak of two consecutive victories and fell to 15th place in the table.

Result: Tottenham (4) – (3) Leeds

This Newcastle is going like a rocket. The team coached by Eddie Howe arrives with confidence sky-high to the World Cup break and showed it against Chelsea that is in a lot of trouble and with an opposite streak to that of Newcastle.

Chelsea went down 1-0 at St. James’ Park and have now gone a month without a win in the Premier League, losing their last three games.

After an even first half, in which either team could have taken the lead, Newcastle accelerated in the second half, managing to find space and, above all, to completely dominate Chelsea. First of all, Newcastle locked Chelsea in their half and, in bursts of play, they were able to break down the resistance of their defense until it was completely dismantled.

It was in a great play by Miguel Almiron, defined by a missile-like shot into the Chelsea goal by Joe Willock in the 67th minute, that Howe’s team got the three points.

Newcastle, who are unbeaten since August 31, has now won five in a row and is now just two points behind second-placed Manchester City. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s third defeat in a row drops them to eighth place in the table.

Result: Newcastle (1) – (0) Chelsea
