Brasileirão Matchday 23 – Roundup and Results

Brasileirão Matchday 23

The matchday 23 of Brasileirão took place this past weekend, but we didn’t have many changes in the table after these games. That just means that the season is in its late stage and the teams are getting close to their final spots. Also, that means that if they want to go up the table, they have to start running engines now. This is especially true in a league such as the Brasileirão, where the fight to avoid relegation is so brutal having 4 teams going down.

Sunday’s main confrontation (Palmeiras vs. Flamengo) ended in a draw, but Fluminense, who had an easy game against Coritiba, ended up winning and securing the three points.

We had four games that ended in 1×1 and another surprising game that ended in 1×0, in the game of Goiás against Atlético Mineiro.

Palmeiras remains in the lead, accompanied by Fluminense. Eight points separate the teams at this point.

There was no change in the clubs that are in the relegation zone, but we saw Fortaleza climb a few more positions after the victory against Corinthians, a surprise that we predicted in our preview.

Let’s see a quick summary of each of the matches.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Atlético Mineiro 0 x 1 Goiás

Atlético Mineiro took the game for granted thinking they could beat Goiás at any moment but were surprised with Pedro Raul’s goal at the beginning of the second half. The champions of last season are now at the 7th position and it’s hard to say that they will get any better by the way the team is playing. Goiás moved up to the 11th position.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Fluminense 5 x 2 Coritiba

What a game Fluminense provided to the fans last Saturday. Striker Cano surprisingly didn’t score a goal, but participated in many of them and helped Fluminense to reach the second position, after the 1-1 draw between Palmeiras and FlamengoCoritiba is still in the 18th position.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Juventude 2 x 2 Botafogo

Botafogo has proved once again that this team is not reliable at critical moments of the season. Juventude cannot beat any team at this point, but Botafogo struggled to win this game and summed up 4 games without winning. Striker Pitta scored twice for Juventude, but that wasn’t enough to secure the three points for the home team.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Palmeiras 1 x 1 Flamengo

Palmeiras and Flamengo didn’t make a great game as expected by the fans, especially because Flamengo used the second team, resting the best players for the cup games in the middle of the week. With the draw, Palmeiras kept 9 points ahead of Flamengo, but just 8 ahead of Fluminense, the new second-position team.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Red Bull Bragantino 1 x 1 Ceará

Red Bull Bragantino is coming from a few games without winning and this game against Ceará was another chapter of the difficulty of keeping the opponents away from their goal. The home team dropped one position (10º now) after drawing the game against Ceará, which is placed 15th.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Fortaleza 1 x 0 Corinthians

Fortaleza was surprised once again and beat 4th position Corinthians in a difficult game at Arena Castelão. They are now in the 13th position and can now dream of bigger things in the league.

Brasileirão Matchday 23: Other Results

Atlético Goianiense 1 x 1 Cuiabá

The duel to avoid relegation ended up in a dramatic draw, with both teams stuck in the same positions they were before. Cuiabá is one position above the bad zone, but they have the same number of points as Avaí (17th). Atlético is 19th.

Athletico 1 x 1 América Mineiro

Playing at the beautiful Arena da Baixada, Athletico couldn’t score another goal to beat América Mineiro. Coach Felipão’s team came from elimination at Copa do Brasil a few days ago, the reason why he couldn’t use his best players in this game. Athletico is 5th; América is 9th.

Santos 1 x 0 São Paulo

Santos got the taste of the victory once again in this even game at Vila Belmiro. Lucas Braga scored the goal that put Santos at the 8th position and left São Paulo at the 12th spot.
