Serie A Matchday 22

Inter returned to Serie A to retake what was theirs, and they did so successfully. They beat a strong Fiorentina with some suffering, while the other teams at the podium got draws.

The most surprising result was that of Juventus, who couldn’t get past one of the worst teams in Empoli. Meanwhile, Milan had a pretty hard time with Bolonia and conceded the draw in injury time.

Now, with the new leaders trying to get ahead, it is time for us to break down some of the action that went down in the most recent Italian Serie A Matchday.

If you were hoping for another one of Juventus’ high-scoring fest, those hopes were dashed less than 20 minutes after kickoff against Empoli.

That is the result of being a man down for over 70 minutes. That’s something that, no matter who you are playing, is always going to put you behind the ball virtually every time. However, It looked like 10-man Juventus might just be able to escape with all three points and extend their lead atop the Serie A table, thanks to Dusan Vlahovic’s rich vein of form rolling on early in the second half.

But, the thing about Empoli is that even though they are sitting in 19th place, they still have a handful of talented players able to do some things. That’s the case of Roma-linked youngster Tommaso Baldanzi, who scored the goal that pulled Empoli level and squashed Juve’s hopes of coming out with a win.

AC Milan were left to rue two missed penalties as they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Bologna, who converted a late spot-kick themselves in a roller-coaster match on Saturday.

With Milan poised for a home win after a Ruben Loftus-Cheek double, their young defender, Filippo Terracciano, pulled Victor Kristiansen’s shirt while the Bologna player ran towards the back post, conceding a penalty. Riccardo Orsolini converted from the spot to secure a draw for the visitors after Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez had both missed their penalties for the home side.

Lazio was unable to find a way through against a lackluster Napoli, with a disallowed Valentin Castellanos bicycle kick having no impact on the 0-0 draw.

Lazio started the match at the Stadio Olimpico on the front foot, having a few early chances from Matias Vecino and Gustav Isaksen, probing the Napoli defense. They were unable to find the right rhythm in the final third, keeping things level as the first half progressed.

In the latter stages of the half, Isaksen again had another decent shot on goal, but it sailed over the crossbar and allowed the Partenopei to enter the break level with their hosts.

Just moments into the second half, Castellanos thought he’d given Lazio a 1-0 lead with an acrobatic bicycle kick after a beautiful long ball, but a VAR replay showed the Argentine striker was a yard or two offside, annulling the goal.

The Biancocelesti continued to push for an opener as the second half continued, with Napoli offering little in the way of forward ventures, but their final product was lacking and they couldn’t break the deadlock.

Inter Milan, with a goal from Lautaro Martínez, regained the lead in Serie A after defeating Fiorentina 0-1, who wasted a penalty in the boots of Nico González to tie the match in the last quarter of an hour. Internazionale played with fire and was about to get burned.

They sat back for almost the entire match and gave up control to Fiorentina, who were very innocent in the last few meters. A header from Lautaro coming off a corner sealed the game.
