Premier League Matchday 22 Roundup

The Premier League Matchday 22 had several excellent matches but without much change in the table, as most of the teams at the top won.

The fight for first place in the table continues to be very interesting, as Liverpool remains 5 points ahead of City after their most recent victory. However, let’s remember that Pep Guardiola’s side has a game in hand, so if everything goes as it should, the lead will be shortened to just 2 points.

On the other hand, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Aston Villa continue with the expectations of staying in the fight for the first place. Gunners and Spurs won convincingly, while Aston Villa was defeated and lost the chance to be equal in second place with 46 points.

Chelsea lost again after three consecutive victories, while Burnley and Sheffield United lost for the 16th time and have a foot and a half in the Second Division.

The game that raised the curtain of this matchday 22 of the Premier League was between Nottingham Forest and Arsenal. The Gunners opened the match as favorites to win, and they did with a score of 2-1.

However, they had some doubts while defining the match, and this almost cost them two points.

The first half was boring, as Arsenal had control of the game but without generating clear scoring chances. 0-0 at the break.

Then, in the second half, the match followed the same pattern, but in the 65th minute, Gabriel Jesus opened the account for the Gunners with an excellent goal. That undoubtedly boosted the visiting team’s confidence and, just 7 minutes later, Bukayo Saka made it 2-0 for Arsenal.

Finally, with the game nearing its conclusion, Taiwo Awoniyi scored 1-2 for Forest in the 89th minute.

One of the most interesting matches this matchday ended in a big surprise, as Newcastle took an excellent 3-1 win at Villa Park against the locals.

The Villans were unable to display all the potential we have seen from them throughout the season, and their defense was unable to withstand the Magpies’ onslaught.  They indeed took control of the ball (61%), but were unable to capitalize on it, and Newcastle looked much more dangerous from the start.

The game was back and forth in the opening minutes, but it was the Magpies who opened the scoring with goals in the 32nd and 36th minutes from Fabian Schär. That left the locals completely unsettled, as in just four minutes, they were completely on the ropes.

With 2-0 in their favor, Newcastle went into the break with their mission virtually complete. However, the best came at the start of the second half, as an intense attack by the Magpies led to Alexandre Moreno’s own goal in the 52nd minute.

That left Aston Villa with no options, as the only thing they could do was to make up the score with Ollie Watkins’ goal in the 71st minute.

Result: Aston Villa (1) – (3) Newcastle

Manchester City knows they cannot slip up at this stage of the season if they want to retain their title as champions, as Liverpool are playing well again. They proved this on matchday 22 with a convincing 3-1 win over Burnley.

City, as they usually do in every game, took possession of the ball and control of the match from start to finish. Despite the absence of Haaland, Pep Guardiola knows he has a star-studded squad that can annihilate anyone.

The Citizens put the game away from the start, as Julian Alvarez scored a brace in the 16th and 22nd minutes to put City 2-0 ahead. Then, at the beginning of the second half, specifically in the 46th minute, Rodri Hernández made it 3-0 with a goal that left the Burnley defense cold.

Finally, in the 90+3 minute, Ameen Al-Dakhil scored Burnley’s consolation goal to make it 3-1.

Finally, the most relevant match of the day, a mind-blowing rivalry full of history, Liverpool vs. Chelsea, resulted in an extraordinary victory for the Reds by 4-1.

The Reds’ level at the moment is indeed infinitely superior to Chelsea’s, but we all expected a more balanced match, considering the great rivalry between these two teams.

However, Liverpool annihilated the Blues’ aspirations throughout the match. They had 28 dangerous chances, with 13 direct shots on goal. While Chelsea only created four scoring chances with three shots on goal.

Liverpool started this match with a goal by Diogo Jota in the 23rd minute. Then, 16 minutes later, the team would make it 2-0 thanks to Connor Bradley.

In the second half, specifically in the 65th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai scored to make it 3-0 for the Reds, which undoubtedly turned the match into a thrashing. Chelsea tried to react to Christopher Nkunku’s goal in the 71st minute, but eight minutes later, Luis Fernando Diaz put the score at 4-1 to lead Liverpool to a solid victory.
