Men’s Branch

Novak Djokovic is going for the only title he is missing: the gold medal. Bronze medalist in Beijing 2008, the 37-year-old Serb, who also broke the record for the oldest player in this round, is only two games away from playing his country’s anthem again on the Philippe-Chatrier court, but first time in an Olympic because he has already won three times there but in the Roland Garros.

He is coming off a 6-3, 7-6 win over Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, and has not lost a single set in the entire tournament. His opponent in the semifinals will be the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who comes from a great surprise by eliminating the German Alexander Zverev, third seed of the tournament, by a double 7-5. Musetti has not lost any set either, and in the last two games, he defeated higher-ranked players.

They have met seven times and Djokovic won six of them, and this year they already met on the same court at Roland Garros, withthe Serb winning in five sets. The only time Musetti won was in 2023, in Monte Carlo, where it is also clay.

On the other side of the draw, we have Carlos Alcaraz, who is in his first Olympic Games and has enjoyed it in a big way. On the one hand, he has been seen in the Olympic Village sharing with other athletes. Then, he had the luxury of being paired with Rafael Nadal in the doubles. And now, he is fighting for a medal. Not bad for the 21-year-old, who has not lost a set and is coming off a 6-3, 7-6 win over Tommy Paul. Besides, he is the current Roland Garros champion, so that is a big plus.

His opponent will be the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has surprised inthese Olympics by eliminating Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 and Casper Ruud in the last game. They lost this Thursday in the mixed doubles semifinals against the Czech pair, so they will go for the bronze this Friday. This year Felix and Carlos already faced each other in the round of 16 at Roland Garros and the Spaniard won in three sets.

Women’s Branch

On the women’s side, China’s Qinwen Zheng made a big surprise by beating Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the world number one, 6-2, 7-5. Zheng will be in her second major final after being a finalist this year at the Australian Open and it can be her fourth title, after winning a WTA 500 and two WTA 250.

Her opponent will be the Croatian Donna Vekic, who had given the surprise much earlier when, in the round of 16, she eliminated the American Coco Gauff by 7-6 and 6-2. Now in the semifinals, she got rid of Slovakian Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova with an easy 6-4 6-0 and is going for her first major title after winning four WTA 250.

It will be the first time a Chinese or a Croatian will stand on the Olympic podium in men’s or women’s tennis.

Poland’s Swiatek, the top contender after winning this year’s Roland Garros, her third consecutive title in that scenario and fourth in the last five years, will go for the bronze medal a few hours earlier against Schmiedlova.
