NFL Week 1 Roundup

NFL Week 1

The wait is finally over and we are so glad, as in the last few days we got to see all the teams go out on the field and kickstart their campaign in the NFL Week 1, showcasing how strong the franchises are after taking a quick rest.

With all teams looking forward to getting into the playoffs, and of course, chasing a spot in the Super Bowl LVIII, things are only expected to get more and more interesting from now on.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who are the current defending champions are strong candidates to lock in a playoff spot. However, we also have the Bengals, Bills, 49ers, Vikings, and Eagles who are looking to stop them.

For now, we have to take a look at the clashes that took place in the first week of the 2023/24 NFL season and break down some of its actions.

The Chiefs raised a championship banner on Thursday, but it was Dan Campbell who raised his arms in jubilation at the end of the night.

Facing one of the most challenging atmospheres in the NFL, the Lions went into Arrowhead Stadium and handed the reigning champions a season-opening loss by holding Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ potent offense to 20 points.

Detroit generated consistent pressure against the Chiefs’ talented offensive line — which may have gotten away with some false starts — and made life difficult for Mahomes, who was held to 226 passing yards. While the Lions’ offense only produced 14 points, a pick-six by rookie Brian Branch got Detroit seven more and was the difference in the end.

For the Chiefs, everything that was feared about their makeshift receiving corps turned out to be true. Mahomes had very few reliable targets in his arsenal with Travis Kelce (knee) out. In the end, mistake after mistake by his receivers ended up costing the team. Kadarius Toney made more mistakes than anyone, including the baffling drop that turned into Branch’s pick-six.

NFL Week 1 – Roundup – Browns (24 – 3) Bengals

When:

Deshaun Watson ran for a touchdown and threw for another, and Cleveland’s defense bottled up Burrow – the NFL’s new highest-paid player – as the Browns opened the season with a 24-3 win over the Bengals on Sunday.

Fueled by Chase dismissing them as “elves” earlier in the week, the Browns harassed Burrow from the start and won an opener at home for the first time since 2004.

Burrow had a rough opener, two days after signing a five-year, $275 million extension, giving him the highest average annual salary in league history. The Browns held him to a career-worst 82 yards passing (14 of 31) as Cleveland’s rebuilt defensive line pressured him all day.

Myles Garrett sacked Burrow on fourth down with 10:27 left to help seal Cleveland’s stunningly easy win over the AFC North champions. The Browns forced the Bengals to punt 10 times in 14 possessions.

The Bengals pulled Burrow with 5:15 left, and he spent the remainder of the game watching with his arms folded on the bench.

Dustin Hopkins kicked three field goals – from 42, 34, and 43 yards – in his debut for the Browns, who traded for him last month after cutting Cade York.

The 100th “Battle of Ohio” was short on memorable moments. However, Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski improved to 6-1 against the Browns’ in-state rival.

NFL Week 1 – Roundup – Steelers (7 – 30) 49ers

Brock Purdy made Patrick Peterson eat his words Sunday in Pittsburgh. Purdy, an Arizona native who grew up cheering for Peterson during his years with the Cardinals, threw two first-half touchdown passes at Peterson’s expense as the 49ers took a 20-0 lead en route to a 30-7 win over the Steelers. They suffered their worst home loss since dropping 31-7 to the Ravens in Week 16 of the 2006 season.

Both of Purdy’s touchdown passes were to wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who won the majority of his first-half matchups against Peterson, an eight-time Pro Bowler who predicted that he would get an interception in his Steelers debut. Aiyuk’s first score was set up by Purdy’s fourth-down completion moments earlier to tight end George Kittle, who suited up Sunday despite dealing with a groin injury.

Pittsburgh showed signs of life just before halftime when Kenny Pickett capped off a 95-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth. However, the 49ers seized back momentum on Christian McCaffrey’s 65-yard touchdown run 90 seconds into the second half.
