The feat that every Kansas fan wanted to see happen was accomplished and in spectacular fashion. Against all odds, Kansas pulled off the biggest comeback in NCAA national championship history; from David McCormack and Remy Martin to defeat North Carolina 72-69 in the March Madness 2022 grand final.

The work to obtain the crown was not easy; since the Jayhawks were losing 40-25 at the end of the second quarter. In addition to being in a scenario that brought back bad memories; after their loss more than a decade ago against Kentucky.

First Quarters

Kansas started with a terrible attacking crisis, but they passed it on to their rival in the second half. Martin, Wilson, and Braun, the Kansas outsiders, and McCormack’s appearance in the inside game saved the Jayhawks from a loss that, after such a disastrous first two quarters, did not belong to them. The comeback is historic, as no team had overcome 15 deficits at halftime since 1963.

Second Half

Kansas had a favorable scoring streak going 31-10 in the first minutes of the second half. He quickly managed to take the advantage that prepared a legendary finish. Nothing and no one expected that after those terrible first two quarters, Kansas would achieve a historic comeback.

McCormick was in charge of putting the go-ahead basket, and the Jayhawks managed to motivate themselves to block Caleb Love, they couldn’t recover the rebound and Armando Bacot tried a dunk, but when he hit the ground he hurt his foot, being out of the game.

The drama came in the final seconds when McCormack hit a basket to put the lead by three. Carolina had a chance to tie the game, but they missed their last four attempts, ending with a shot by Love in the last second of the game that gave the Jayhawks the victory with a very tight score of 72-69.

Following this victory, Kansas achieved its fourth national title and the second for Coach Bill Self in charge of the team. The comeback surpassed those recorded by Kentucky in 1988 when they recovered from a 10-point deficit against Utah, and Chicago’s against Cincinnati, which was from a 15-point deficit in 1963.
