Apertura MX 2024: Matchday 4 Roundup

The emotions of the Apertura MX 2024 continue, and last weekend, we enjoyed the actions of Matchday 4, where we saw exceptional matches and left us with a triple tie at the top of the table between Cruz Azul, Pumas, and Tigres.

Yes, as we mentioned, after four rounds of Liga MX football play, we have three teams tied at the top of the table with ten points, all undefeated with three wins and one draw. However, no other team can be ruled out, as Monterrey has 9 points, Toluca and Atlas have 8, while Guadalajara and Tijuana have 7.

That leaves us with a good taste in our mouths at this moment of the tournament since, let’s remember, the Liga MX will have a one-month break due to playing the Leagues Cup 2024, along with all the MLS teams.

We begin this Liga MX summary with Tigres UANL’s crushing victory over Santos Laguna, with a score of 3-0.

In addition to the overwhelming score, Tigres was completely superior to Santos in this match, even though it was at Corona Stadium. However, it should also be noted that the home team had several opportunities to get into the game, as they had 15 scoring chances with six shots on goal.

Similarly, after a back-and-forth first half, which ended with a 0-0 scoreline, Tigres reacted after the halftime break.

At minute 60, the usual André-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring to make it 1-0. This goal gave Tigres much more confidence, and they went on the attack and, at minute 86′, Ozziel Herrera made it 2-0. Finally, at minute 90′, Nicolás Ibañez scored the definitive 3-0 to give the felines a resounding victory.

Cruz Azul skated at home against a Toluca team that made it difficult for them and ended up tying the game with a 1-1 score.

While it is true that the Cementeros had plenty of opportunities to go ahead on the scoreboard, Toluca’s defense and goalkeeper were really good and prevented each of those approaches.

We can say that everything started extremely well for Toluca, as they managed to take the lead in the 39th minute, thanks to Maximiliano Araújo’s goal. After the goal, Toluca completely shut themselves in and tried to avoid all of Cruz Azul’s approaches. However, in the 80th minute, Ángel Sepúveda scored the 1-1 to give Cruz Azul a well-deserved draw in this home match.

Result: Cruz Azul (1) – (1) Toluca

Apertura MX 2024 Matchday 4: Juárez vs. América

When?Saturday, July 20, 11:10 pm ET, 10:10 PM CST, 9:10 pm MT, and 8:10 pm PT

After a really slow start to the tournament, América got back to winning ways on matchday 4 with a 2-1 victory over Juárez.

América is having a lot of problems with their finishing, despite having a talented squad. In addition, some defensive lapses leave the team naked in the first minutes of the matches.

An example of this was this game against Juarez, as carelessness in the 4th minute gave the home team the chance to score the first goal of the game at the feet of Aitor Garcia. Juárez then tried to play on the counter-attack, withstanding América’s onslaught. However, in the 21st minute, Henry Martín scored the 1-1 that gave the Águilas great tranquility as they were dominating.

After that, the game became a textbook give-and-take that could have ended in a 1-1 draw. However, in the 90+2′ minute, Rodrigo Aguirre Soto scored the definitive 2-1 to lead América to its second victory.

Result: Juárez (1) – (2) América

Apertura MX 2024 Matchday 4: Pumas vs. Pachuca

When?Sunday, July 21, 7:00 pm ET, 6:00 PM CST, 5:00 pm MT, and 4:00 pm PT
Where?Estadio Olímpico Universitario
Where can I Watch it?fuboTV, TUDN, and Univision

Finally, we close this summary with Pumas’ stupendous and solid 2-0 win over Pachuca Tuzos.

While it is true that Pumas did not have the possession (38%), they were able to capitalize on the few scoring opportunities they had to take the win.

Pachuca, despite having the possession, lacked the determination to score at least one goal to keep them in the match. On the contrary, Pumas took advantage of defensive lapses in the 45+6′ minute to go into halftime ahead 1-0, thanks to a goal by Ulises Rivas.

Then, at the beginning of the second half, Pumas attacked the opponent’s goal several times, and after a fortuitous play, they were able to take a penalty kick that was later converted by César Huertas in minute 51′ to close the game.

Result: Pumas (2) – (0) Pachuca
