This weekend horse racing fans will enjoy a new event featuring a juicy $300,000 prize pool, featuring 2-year-old thoroughbreds. The American Pharoah Stakes will be held in Santa Anita Park and will be raced on a 1 1/16-mile circuit. The date is on October 1, 2021.
This race is grade 1 and has the participation of very young horses. In addition to this, the winner of the race will have the privilege of having a place to participate in the next major horse racing event worldwide. This will be the Breeders’ Juvenile Cup.
The American Pharoah Stakes has been, historically, a very important race for all horse racing lovers. Its beginnings were in the year 1970, and it was known under the name of Norfolk Stakes. The race is always held in late September or early October and has a “Win and You’re in” label (referring to the Breeders ’Cup Juvenile), which makes it more attractive.
Many important horses, that is to say, first-class, have won this race throughout history. We have examples such as Chief’s Crown, Capote, Best Pal, Bertrando, Free House, Dixie Union, and Lookin at Lucky.
One of the best trainers in the world and, obviously, most popular in horse racing, Bob Baffert, has managed to win this race a total of 9 times. This time, he is one of the two horse trainers that are confirmed to participate in the American Pharoah Stakes. He will do this with the two-year-old thoroughbred horse, Rockefeller.

In the last 3 years that the American Pharoah Stakes has been contested, on 2 occasions the horses trained by Bob Baffert have managed to win the victory. These were in 2018 with the horse, Game Winner, and in 2019, Eight Rings. In the 2020 race, the horse Spielberg, trained by Baffert, was the undisputed favorite to take the victory. However, a great performance by Get Her Number cut off all chances of doing so.
The other horse that is confirmed for this race is trained by J. Keith Desormeaux, who, despite not having the good year 2021, where he has only managed to win two races, has all his hopes pinned on his horse to take the victory. The horse, Oviatt Class, is coming off a win on August 27, 2021.
While Baffert is fully convinced that his young horse, who is going to his second race, will take the victory in this race.
