2024 Triple Crown Roundup

Triple Crown

The most attractive circuit of horse racing in the United States ended after the Belmont Stakes, thus closing the events of the Triple Crown.

Mystik Dan in the Kentucky Derby, Seize the Grey in the Preakness Stakes, and Dornoch in the Belmont were the specimens that will remain in the history of this sport since they were the champions of the three most important races in the country of the Stars and Stripes.

However, of the three, the one with the best results was Mystik Dan, since he was able to participate in all the events and give good performances. Let’s review what happened in the Thoroughbred calendar.

As always happens, Kentucky started the triad of the crown, and on that occasion, the great favorite was Sierra Leone because he came leading the way to the competition at Churchill Down.

But this sport is one of surprises, and the horse that was 17° in that way was the champion: Mystik Dan, who managed to stop the race with a time of 2:03:34.

It was a heart-stopping finish, where in the last meters, Sierra Leone pressed and forced a photo finish, which left Mystik Dan as the winner by thousandths of a second.

The champion was jockeyed by 38-year-old Brian Hernandez, who had previously won the Kentucky Oaks with Thorpedo Anna. The trainer is Kenny McPeek and is owned by Lance Gasaway, 4 G Racing LLC & Daniel Hamby III.

Forever Young closed out the podium that day in Kentucky.

After Mystik Dan’s performance in the previous race, it was a chance to see if his performance was just a fluke. What was experienced at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course was exciting, as Seize the Grey grew in his performance and achieved a dominant victory, being in first position for much of the course.

Despite Mystik Dan pushing hard in the final meters on a muddy course, Seize the Grey didn’t let up on his chances and ended up passing the finish line in first place.

Mystik Dan finished second, showing signs of greatness, and the podium was closed by Catching Freedom.

The champion jockey was Jaime Torres, and the winning trainer was D. Wayne Lukas, with whom we must take our hats off since he won this trophy for the seventh time.

Wayne has also tasted the honey of success in Kentucky four times and in the Belmont Stakes four other times.

Once again, Sierra Leone had the pressure of being the top contender to win. It was thought this could be the moment to prove his quality, but again, he was frustrated.

This time, the winner was Dornoch, a horse that was not even among the five candidates to cross the finish line in the first position.

But Panamanian jockey Luis Saez, plus the work of trainer Danny Gargan, allowed this specimen to celebrate his most important triumph.

For Saez, this is his second win in the Saratoga Race Course competition, as he had already achieved success in 2021.

Dornoch was followed by Mindframe and Sierra Leone, in his second podium finish in the U.S. Big Three.
