The Preakness Stakes is the second leg of the American Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing. First run in 1873 at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland, it is a Grade I stakes race run over 9.5 furlongs (1 3/16 miles) on dirt.
The 149th running of the Preakness Stakes is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Pimlico. Often referred to as “The Race for the Black-Eyed Susans” because a blanket of yellow flowers covers the winner, the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles long and the shortest of the three Triple Crown races.
The winner of the Kentucky Derby should headline the 2024 Preakness field. Post Preakness time is tentatively scheduled for 6:50 PM EST.
Mystic Dan pulled off a thrilling upset in the 150th Kentucky Derby, closing from well back to win at odds of 18-1. The Ken McPeek-trained colt was largely overlooked in the betting but had a perfect trip to capture the Run for the Roses.
Mystic Dan gave trainer McPeek his first Kentucky Derby victory. Sierra Leona and Forever Young turned in excellent efforts to complete the trifecta, while T O Password finished fifth.
Horses confirmed and ruled out for the 2024 Preakness Stakes
The Preakness Stakes field is limited to 14 horses, although that number rarely enters the starting gate. These are the horses confirmed for the 2024 Preakness Stakes following the conclusion of the Kentucky Derby:
Imagination
Muth
Mystik Dan
Just Steel
Seize the Grey
Mugatu
Uncle Heavy
Tuscan Gold
Some of the top contenders for the 2024 Kentucky Derby have opted to bypass the Preakness Stakes and rest up for the Belmont Stakes:
Sierra Leone
Forever Young
T O Password
Resilience
Sierra Leone, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, has not been training well since that race, according to his connections. They feel the best way forward is to give him time off to recover before attempting the 1.5-mile Belmont Stakes next month.
Forever Young, after finishing third in the Derby, the colt’s trainer has decided to concentrate on the final leg of the Triple Crown. The Belmont’s long distance should suit Forever Young’s late closing style.
T O Password, a grueling fifth-place effort in the Derby for this talented but lightly raced colt. His owner wants to give him more time between races, so TO Password will aim for the Belmont.

Surprise 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan will look to pull off another upset. His late charge to win the Derby proved he had the stamina for the 1 3/16-mile distance. With a Derby win under his belt, he could be tough to beat. However, Bob Baffert’s apprentice, Muth, skipped the Derby to concentrate on the Preakness. He has been training well in preparation for the Triple Crown. With Baffert’s solid Preakness record, Muth looks poised as the current favorite.
The Preakness pace projects that the firm favorite to win is Muth, as they have been preparing exclusively for this race for the past few weeks. But experienced ones like Mystic Dan and Tuscan Gold should be able to entice them to win, as the distances shorten to 1 3/16 miles. These are our picks for the podium.
