The third tournament on the Florida swing is THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
The tournament will play as a par 72, measuring 7,256 yards, and be put on TifEagle Bermuda overseeded with Poa trivialis/velvet bentgrass greens.
This tournament is usually in May; but with the move to March (in 2019), the playing surface is overseeded.
This year the event takes place from March 8th to March 13th.
Event Overview – The Players Championship – 2022 – PGA Golf Tour
The Players Championship is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It currently offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf ($20 million), overtaking the U.S. Open, which offers a $12.5 million purse.
The field usually includes the top 50 players in the world rankings; but unlike the major championships and World Golf Championships events, it is property of the PGA Tour and not an official event on other tours.
Despite not being a major, it has been taken as such by the tour. Taken as the fifth major, is often in contention as the next most prestigious tournament in golf. This is because of the characteristics it shares with the majors, such as the high-class field and its large purse.
The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is a Pete Dye design and probably his most notable, with 88 bunkers and 17 water hazards that come into play on 17 holes, it’s easy to make big numbers.
In 2019, the tournament recorded the ninth-most bogeys and fourth-most double-bogeys.
The layout doesn’t have back-to-back holes featuring similarities of any kind, as they’ll dogleg in opposite directions, either into or against the wind, and vary substantially in distance.
It’s the strongest field of the season, and it includes world No. 1 Jon Rahm, 2019 PLAYERS champion Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, and reigning FedExCup Champion Patrick Cantlay.
And that’s just to name a few.
