It’s time for The Genesis Invitational, the third Signature Event of the PGA Tour season, which has been relocated from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines in San Diego.
The tournament will take place from February 13 to 16 and will feature some of the best golfers in the world. However, it will be missing Tiger Woods, as the American golfer announced on Monday that he will not participate due to the recent passing of his mother.
Many of the top golfers will compete on this par-72, 7,802-yard course. The defending champion is Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, while Lloyd Mangrum (USA) and Macdonald Smith (Scotland) hold the record for the most wins in tournament history, with four titles each.
Since the event changed from Genesis Open to Genesis Invitational in 2020, no nationality has repeated as a champion, with winners from Japan, Spain, Chile, Australia, and the United States.

The Genesis Invitational 2025 Top Contenders
The best golfers in the world will gather in San Diego, California, and the top contender to watch is Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, has only played one PGA Tour event this year (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am), which he won, securing his 27th career title.
McIlroy arrives well-rested and aims to improve upon last year’s performance, where he finished 24th. Since this event will be played on the same course as the Farmers Insurance Open, it’s worth noting that McIlroy finished third in that tournament in 2020 and fifth in 2019.Additionally, he placed seventh at the 2021 U.S. Open, which was also held at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Ranked second on our list is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The American faces a challenge, as this will be his third consecutive week of competition. While he managed a ninth-place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he later struggled at the WM Phoenix Open, finishing 25th.
Scheffler has achieved two top-10 finishes in this tournament, with his best result being seventh place in 2022. Excluding the TOUR Championship, his last official PGA Tour victory came at the Travelers Championship in June. However, he has won five Signature Events, four last year.
Rounding out the top three contenders is defending champion Hideki Matsuyama, currently ranked No. 5 in the world. The Japanese kicked off the season with a win at The Sentry, the first Signature Event of the year, marking his 11th career title.
Since that victory, however, Matsuyama has struggled to find his best form, failing to crack the top 10 in any of the four events he has played. His best finish in that span was 16th place at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
The Genesis Invitational 2025 Outside picks
This tournament features many stars, and Collin Morikawa is one of them. The world No. 4 will be playing his third event of the year, having competed in two previous Signature Events, where he finished second at The Sentry. In all of 2024, he has yet to win a title and is eager to lift a trophy once again.
One of the best-performing golfers in the first two months of the year has been Sepp Straka. The Austrian claimed victory at The American Express, securing his third PGA Tour title; additionally, he finished seventh at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 15th last week at the WM Phoenix Open.
Finally, let’s include Harris English, who won the Farmers Insurance Open just a few weeks ago on this very course, making it a fresh and familiar setting for him. However, he has struggled in this year’s Signature Events, missing the cut in the first and finishing 73rd in the second.
