The PGA Tour will make a spectacular return to Hawaii, as the first full-field event of the season will feature a plethora of young talents mixed with experienced players from all over the globe for the Sony Open in Hawaii 2024. With the season being so young, there’s a lot to define yet, as the favorites to win the tour won’t be emerging clearly until May. However, this is precisely why these events at the beginning of the year are so exciting, everything could happen.
The Waialae Country Club
As always, the spectacular tropical views from the islands will accompany the golfers in their quest for glory. This time, the protagonist will be the Waialae Country Club, designed by Seth Raynor but will several modifications made by other famous golf course planners. At the moment it accounts for 83 carefully placed bunkers that give plenty of options to the athletes while increasing the challenge.
It plays to a par 70 for the event and measures 7,020 yards from the Championship tees, 6,456 yards from the Member tees, and 5,962 from the Forward tees. At this time of the year the winds will be gentle, although in a tropical landscape with few natural obstacles for it, it’s always a challenge to calculate how much it can influence your plays.
The Players
Brian Harman appears as the favorite due to his plenty of experience in the Sony Open, although he appeared in the top 10 just once.
For Matt Fitzpatrick, there’s not much to say, as his experience has made him appear many times before in this section. He just got a top 15 at the Sentry, but he, more than likely, just took it as a warm-up.
Tyrrell Hatton debut at Kapalua featured an 11-under 62. It was a more than decent start that has him as an important pick.
Ludvig Aberg was falling behind at Kapalua but ended up recovering a lot of ground with a bogey-free, 10-under 63. This comeback proves that he has more in him than what is shown at first glance.
