The Fortinet Championship, previously the Safeway Open, is a professional golf tournament, part of the PGA Tour

Originally sponsored by Fry’s Electronics, it was first staged in 2007 as the Fry’s Electronics Open at Grayhawk Golf Club’s Raptor Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.

It was renamed the Frys.com Open in 2008 and moved to California in 2010, to CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, southeast of San Jose.

In October 2014, part of the PGA Tour’s 2015 season, it moved north to Napa and the Silverado Country Club (North course).

Beginning with the October 2016 tournament, part of the PGA Tour’s 2017 season, the primary sponsor was Safeway Inc., and that continued through 2020.

In 2021 Fortinet became the title sponsor on a six-year deal.

Event Overview – Fortinet Championship – 2022 – PGA Golf Tour

This week, players should expect to be greeted by tricky Poa Annua greens which will be bumpy in the late afternoons. Accuracy will be at a premium as this course features tree-lined fairways, but the rough isn’t expected to be a huge penalty this week, which means shorter hitters are in play.

All six of the winners here since 2016 have had a winning score of 14-under par or better.

Last year, Max Homa won by a stroke over Maverick McNealy at 19-under.

That win jumpstarted Homa’s season, and he would go on to finish in a tie for fifth in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List with a -17 score at the TOUR Championship.

The returning champion shares the top spot with 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Matsuyama had two wins of his early last season, at the Zozo Championship and the Sony Open, before finishing T11 at the season-ending Tour Championship.

Stewart Cink won this event in 2020 at 21-under while Cameron Champ won in 2019 at 17-under, showing that both shorter hitters and bombers have a chance to win at Silverado.

The last time this tournament was decided by a playoff happened in 2018 when Kevin Tway defeated Brandt Snedeker and Ryan Moore in extra holes after all three finished at 14-under.
