2024 TOUR Championship Top Contenders
The main candidate is Scottie Scheffler. For the third consecutive year, the American arrives as the best in the ranking, so he has the sporting advantage with a par -10. So not only his level, butthose “extra” strokes give a plus to this golfer who was runner-up in 2022, losing by one stroke to Rory McIlroy.
Although he is the first golfer to reach this tournament as first three consecutive times, he has never been able to win it. In 2024 he won six PGA Tour titles, including the Masters. In addition, he was a gold medalist in the Olympic Games.
He did not fare well in his last tournament, finishing 33rd in the BMW Championship, his second-worst result of the season after 41st in the U.S. Open. In August, in addition to the title in Paris, he was fourth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Second in the list of championships is Xander Schauffele. And it is that in addition to being second in the ranking and starting with a -8, he is one of the top entertainers of this tournament. Champion in 2017, he was runner-up in 2019, 2020, and 2022, so he has experience in this field.
Schauffele was champion this year “only” of two tournaments, but those tournaments were Majors: the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. In addition, he was Top 10 in the other two Majors, and achieved three more runner-up finishes this year, the most recent a couple of weeks ago at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He has just finished fifth at the BMW Championship.
And third, in this deck of candidates, we are going to put the maximum winner of the event: Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman has not had his best year, being champion at the Wells Fargo Championship and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, besides being runner-up at the U.S. Open. However, he has won in this course three times, the most recent in 2022.
He is tied with Tiger Woods in the number of titles in this tournament, so his mission will be to be alone at the top. He will start with -4, so he will need to have almost perfect rounds. He is coming from finishing 11th in the BMW Championship and 68th in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
2024 TOUR Championship Outside picks
The Japanese Hideki Matsuyama also has to be considered a serious candidate, not only because he is third in the ranking and starts with -7, but also because a few weeks ago he was champion in the FedEx St. Jude Championship and was doing very well in the BMW Championship, but he had to withdraw after the first day with a lower back injury. The level of the Asian was very good, he also 2024 was champion of The Genesis Invitational and bronze medalist in Paris 2024. However, we will have to see if he is fully recovered.
Keegan Bradley is the fourth in the list so he will start with a -6 in his card. The American only won one title in 2024, but it was last weekend at the BMW Championship, giving a big surprise so he comes motivated. In addition to that title, he was runner-up this year at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Sony Open in Hawaii, in what has been his only Top 10s of 2024.
Finally, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg is the last of the players who has a different score from the rest, as he will start with a -5. The European has not been able to conquer any title in 2024 but he comes from being runner-up a few days ago at the BMW Championship, but his best result was also a second place at the Augusta Masters. His last PGA Tour title was on November 11 last year.
