2024 RBC Canadian Open Top Contenders
The list of top contenders has to start with a legend of the sport and someone who already knows how to win at the RBC Canadian Open: Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.Â
The 35-year-old won in Canada twice, the first time in 2019, -22 strokes over par, beating Shane Lowry and Webb Simpson. He then won it in 2022, defeating American Tony Finau, finishing with a total of 263 strokes.Â
If he becomes champion again this year, the Northern Irishman will join the group of three-time champions formed by Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, and Lee Trevino.Â
In addition, it should be remembered that in his career, he has won four majors, but the last of them 10 years ago. However, last year, he was second at the US Open. In 2024, he was 22nd in the Masters and 12th in the PGA Championship, but he did add a title: the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January.Â
Rory is third in the world, so he is the best ranked in the competition, and then we have the American, Sahith Theegala, in the 12th position.Â
Theegala is one of those golfers who can make a difference and from whom a big hit is expected, which so far, he has not been able to make a reality. In his career, he has only one PGA win and that was the Fortinet Championship in 2023. His last participation was in the PGA Championship, finishing in 12th place, therefore, he starts third with more options in Canada.Â
British Tommy Fleetwood is not coming from a good PGA Championship either, as he finished in 26th place. However, he is another of the great candidates to shout champion in Ontario.Â
At 33 years of age, he is ranked 13th in the world, and this year, he added a trophy to his cabinet since he defeated South African Thriston Lawrence and Rory McIlroy in the Dubai Invitational. He has 10 victories as a professional, and it should be noted that his 2024 allowed him to enter the podium of the Masters.Â
From Ireland, we have to take into account Shane Lowry, a 37-year-old veteran who has been a professional since 2009. This year, he already won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, beating McIlroy in the playoff.Â
2024 RBC Canadian Open Outside picks
Cameron Young is 17th in the world for the PGA and comes to this tournament with a great drought of victories. The last time he shouted champion was in 2021, triumphing in the Evans Scholars Invitational. This year, he could be ninth in the Masters, but up to that point, there is not much else to highlight.
For his part, Kim Tom is another of the young golfers who are making their way in this sport, and with his 21 years, he already has three wins in the PGA.In this2024 he has not had good performances in the majors, being 30 in the Masters and 26 in the PGA Tournament.
Finally, we must highlight the reigning champion, Nick Taylor, who has a lot of pressure because he is a local. He is the first Canadian in 70 years to compete as defending champion. Nick is a 36-year-old veteran who already won this year at the WM Phoenix. It is important to remember that last year, he was the champion in his homeland, beating the British Fleetwood.Â
