The PGA Championship is the second major tournament of the year on the PGA Tour. This year, the 106th edition of the event will be held May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The PGA Championship always offers excitement as the world’s best golfers compete for the coveted Wanamaker Trophy and a share of the $17.5 million prize purse. Storylines are plentiful this year, with big names like Tiger Woods potentially returning from injury and stars like Scottie Scheffler looking to claim his first major title.

Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa. But the field is wide open, especially after Justin Thomas’ playoff comeback over Will Zalatoris last year.

Latin American golf will also be well represented, with Mito Pereira of Chile looking to improve on his runner-up finish from last year. Other Latin American golfers in the field include Joaquin Niemann, Emiliano Grillo, Alejandro Tosti, and Camilo Villegas.

Rory McIlroy enters the 2024 PGA Championship looking to capture his third Wanamaker Trophy. The Northern Irishman won the tournament in 2012 and 2014, and his victory at Valhalla in 2014 was one of his most memorable major championship victories.

World #1 Scottie Scheffler comes to Valhalla looking to capture the first major title in his career. The 27-year-old American has been at his best in recent weeks, with wins at the Masters and RBC Heritage. With his incredible length off the tee and sharp iron play, Scheffler has shown he has the game to compete in major championships.

Spaniard Jon Rahm is arguably the best golfer without a major title. Ranked No. 2 in the world, Rahm’s stellar ball striking and aggression make him a threat every time he tees it up. After several close calls, Rahm expects Valhalla to be the site of his first professional major.

Collin Morikawa burst onto the scene by winning the 2020 PGA Championship. The 27-year-old American boasts one of the best iron games in the world. If Morikawa can make his normally reliable position cooperate, he could very well lift the Wanamaker Trophy again.

The Course: Valhalla Golf Club

Valhalla Golf Club is located in Louisville, Kentucky, and opened in 1986. The course was designed by professional golfer Jack Nicklaus and has hosted the PGA Championship four times: 1996, 2000, 2014, and 2024.

The 1996 PGA Championship at Valhalla saw Mark Brooks defeat Kenny Perry in a playoff to capture his only major championship. In 2000, Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship at Valhalla, defeating Bob May in another playoff after tying at the end of regulation play. At the 2014 PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy captured the title, winning by two strokes over Phil Mickelson.

Valhalla is a par-72 course that plays 7,458 yards from the championship tees. The course features dramatic elevation changes and meandering creeks throughout the layout.

2024 PGA Championship Betting Picks

Scottie Scheffler ranked No. 1 in the world, leads a group of young stars hoping to capture this championship trophy after winning the previous two tournaments. Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Ludvig Aberg, and others have the game to win if they can handle the pressure.

Rory McIlroy comes into the tournament with the firm conviction to return to the top of the PGA Tour rankings and he also knows what it’s like to win in this tournament, as let’s remember his dominant victory in the 2022 edition. McIlroy won the last PGA Championship held at Valhalla in 2014 and feels comfortable on the course. With his length off the tee and accurate iron play, he will be hard to beat if he shoots well.

In the end, Rory McIlroy’s previous success at Valhalla and his excellent form this season make him the prediction to win the 2024 PGA Championship. If not McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler stands out as a strong contender after winning his two most recent tournaments played. Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm also have the talent to be in the mix on Sunday afternoon. It should be an exciting weekend of world-class golf with the second major title of the year on the line.
