2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta

The Mexico Open at Vidanta is a PGA Tour event played annually in Mexico at the Vidanta Vallarta golf course in Jalisco. First held in 2016 as the Mexico Championship, it has had an extraordinary history but has stabilized in recent years as a regular stop on the PGA Tour.

This tournament debuted as the Mexico Championship at Chapultepec Golf Club near Mexico City but moved to Vidanta Vallarta on the Pacific coast in 2020. The new venue proved popular with players and has strengthened the course. In addition, sponsor Grupo Salinas stepped in to provide a lucrative purse, and the event was renamed the Mexico Open.

Now this 2024 edition, the Mexico Open has established itself as an exciting part of the PGA Tour schedule to be played February 22-25. The tropical location and coastal views make it a favorite stop for players and fans of good golf. In addition, with a prize pool of $1.3 million, it offers 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner along with a two-year exemption from the PGA Tour.

Tony Finau arrives at the 2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta as the defending champion after winning the 2023 edition. The victory in Mexico was one of the best PGA Tour wins of Finau’s career, of that there is no doubt, as he managed to beat John Rahm. The consistent American was relieved to return to the winner’s circle after coming agonizingly close on numerous occasions. Finau will be looking to relive fond memories of last year as he attempts to successfully defend his Mexican Open title this weekend.

The Course: Vidanta Vallarta Golf Course

The Vidanta Vallarta Golf Course is a par 72 layout designed by World Golf Hall of Fame architect Jack Nicklaus. The 7,210-yard course traverses the exceptional coastal desert areas on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The course offers breathtaking views of Banderas Bay from many holes and unique cliff-side greens that hang over the sea.

The coastal setting offers many challenges for golfers, whether experienced or novice, especially when the wind picks up. This is why it will be crucial to keep the ball in play, due to the numerous forced carries over ravines, bunkers, and cliffs throughout the layout. Small, undulating greens also value precise iron play.

2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta – Betting picks

The Mexico Open at Vidanta 2024 is wide open this year, with several players in contention for the title. Tony Finau comes in as the betting favorite with odds of 7.50. The American is coming off a T19 finish at The Genesis Invitational and has the firepower to win at this event.

A European star is hot on Finau’s heels on the odds board. Nicolai Hojgaard (17.00) has several wins on the European circuit and is trending upwards. However, he is coming off an E39 at the Genesis Invitational.

Emiliano Grillo (21.00) will have a lot of support from the fans at the Mexico Open, where the Argentinean is the best Latin American in the tournament and has some chances to make a surprise. Grillo comes from finishing E44th at the Genesis Invitational.

Given the open nature of the field, any number of golfers could ultimately lift the trophy on Sunday. There is no doubt that Finau, Højgaard, and Grillo are the most likely to make the podium, but, there could also be surprises in the tournament.
