2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship Top Contenders
Scottie Schefflerç arrives as the world’s No. 1 and is having a great 2024 after winning six PGA Tour titles this year. That includes the Masters Tournament and The Players Championship, both won for the second time. In addition, he has just won a gold medal for his country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The 28-year-old American is in his best year, winning two titles last year and four in 2022. The gold medal at the Olympics is undoubtedly a very important boost for the rest of the year.
In 2024, he has played 16 tournaments, making it into the top 10 14 times, which is a great record. In addition to the six titles, he was runner-up twice . In other words, in 50% of the tournaments he has played in the PGA Tour this year , he has achieved first or second place .
Another favorite is Xander Schauffele, second in the ranking and has just been crowned champion in the last Major: The Open. With nine under par, the American won his second Major of the year after winning the PGA Championship in May.
Like Scheffler, this is Schauffele’s best year , although he won three tournaments in 2022 and “only” two in 2024, those two were Majors, the first of his career . This year, he achieved 12 Top 10s out of 18 tournaments in which he participated, not counting the Olympic Games, where he finished ninth. He was Top 10 in all four Majors.
And third in this deck of candidates we have to put Rory McIlroy, who is also third in the FedEx ranking. Unlike the Americans, this has not been the best year for the Northern Irishman, who was only crowned champion at the Wells Fargo Championship, in addition to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans paired with Shane Lowry.
He did not have a great start to the year, but he improved in the last two months, being runner-up in the U.S. Open, fourth in the RBC Canadian Open and Genesis Scottish Open, and fifth in the Olympics. His setback in this period was that he failed to make the cut at The Open Championship.
2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship Outside picks
Someone who wants to win his first PGA Tour title is Tommy Fleetwood. The Briton managed to win the European Tour’s Dubai Invitational this year, beating Rory McIlroy. In addition, he was a silver medalist in the Olympic Games and third in the Masters Tournament. He made the cut in three of the four Majors, failing only in The Open Championship.
Hideki Matsuyama should not be overlooked. The Japanese was another of those who shone in the Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal, and this year, he was already champion of The Genesis Invitational. He was sixth in the U.S. Open and made the cut in 15 of the 16 tournaments he played in 2024.
Finally, let’s include Will Zalatoris among the players who can cause a surprise. The 27-year-old American has only one title in the PGA Tour, but it was this same tournament two years ago, so he has experience in this field. However, it has been a bad year, failing to make the cut in seven of 19 tournaments, his best result being a second place in The Genesis Invitational played in February.
