The CJ Cup Byron Nelson is an annual PGA Tour event founded in 1944. Originally called the Byron Nelson Golf Classic, it was renamed in 2022 after a new title sponsor was added. The tournament is played in May each year at the TPC Craig Ranch course north of Dallas, Texas. It has a total prize purse of $9.5 million.
The CJ Cup Byron Nelson is a 72-hole stroke play event open to 132 PGA Tour professionals. It is one of the longest-running non-major tournaments on the PGA Tour.
Some of the biggest names in golf have won the tournament over the years, including Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Tiger Woods. More recently, stars such as Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, and Hideki Matsuyama have taken trophy home.
The 2024 edition will mark the 81st anniversary of the tournament. The CJ Byron Nelson Cup continues to attract top talent and offers exciting golf action each spring.
Relevant participants
Leading the field this week is Texas native and three-time champion Jordan Spieth. Spieth returns to the tournament for the first time since 2021 and looks to improve his runner-up finish at TPC Craig Ranch in 2022. With his elite ball striking and scrambling skills, Spieth should compete on the tree-lined course.
Jason Day is another former major winner to watch. The Australian won the Byron Nelson in 2023 with his first victory in five years. Day has had success at TPC Craig Ranch in the past and will look to keep the momentum going from last year’s win.
One of golf’s young stars, Will Zalatoris, enters as one of the pre-tournament favorites. Zalatoris has yet to win on the PGA Tour but has compiled an impressive resume with multiple runner-up finishes in Majors. His elite iron game is a perfect fit for the TPC Craig Ranch layout. Expect to see his name near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
The Course: TPC Craig Ranch
TPC Craig Ranch will host the CJ Byron Nelson Cup for the second time this year. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this par 72 layout is 7,468 yards long. The course features Zoysia fairways and greens that provide pure surfaces for players to showcase their skills.
There have been some minor adjustments to the course configuration since last year’s tournament. The rough has increased slightly to punish errant tee shots. The greens resurfaced in the off-season and will run a bit faster than in previous years. Several bunkers were added around the greens to further challenge players on their approach shots.
The overall course sets up well for ball strikers. Zoysia’s fairways promote a bit of running on tee shots and greenside approaches. Accuracy off the tee will be paramount, as the rough penalty places a premium on finding the short grass. Longer hitters who can avoid the newly added fairway bunkers will have an advantage.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Betting Picks
Spieth is one of the best players in the field and has performed well at TPC Craig Ranch in the past, finishing second in 2022. As a Texan, he is highly motivated to win the Nelson, especially now that it is named after the legendary Byron Nelson.
His elite short game and scrambling ability make him a great fit for TPC Craig Ranch, which has Bermuda greens that value chipping and putting. If Spieth can roll the putter like his best years on tour, he should compete on a course he is comfortable with.
After analyzing the field and the odds, our prediction for the winner of the 2024 CJ Club ByronNelson is Jordan Spieth. Zalatoris and Day will complete the podium.
