The first leg matches of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League round of 16 have started with everything. Each of the teams that are in these final instances will go out to kill or die; trying to get the pass to the next phase of this tournament.
Villarreal, who had not played a Champions League round of 16 matches for more than 12 years, arrived with the dream and the mission of giving a surprise; to leave behind a team like Juventus that is experiencing its best moment in the season.
Villarreal arrived with tremendous confidence and wanted to take advantage of their home status in this first leg. But the yellow submarine sank only 40 seconds from the first whistle; Dusan Vlahovic scored the goal that put his team ahead on the board.
Juventus managed to take advantage for several minutes to dominate the game when Villarreal was still beating after the goal scored at the beginning of the match. But, Villarreal was not far behind, they managed to react spectacularly and create several clear scoring chances that, in the end, could not end in goals.
Lo Celso managed a shot at the post, Arnaut Danjuma had another clear goal chance that was cleared by Juventus’ goalkeeper Szczesny. Almost reaching the end of the first half, Albiol managed to cover a dangerous shot from Juventus, preventing the second goal from falling.
Second Half
The second half began with an onslaught from Juventus that almost resulted in a goal from Alvaro Morata when his shot passed very close to the Villarreal area.
It wasn’t until minute 66 when thanks to an excellent pass from Capoue to Dani Parejo, which dislodged the Juventus defense, that Villarreal managed to tie the game.
Both teams continued their intense attacks and, failing to get the goal that would give them the lead on the board, we could see two desperate teams in front of the goal.
Neither of the two teams achieved the task, although they got an important draw and there is still a game to play, Villarreal have to go out and kill or die in Turin to try to score goals early and continue with the dream of being in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
While Juventus is still a very dangerous and difficult team to beat when playing at home.
