Serie A Matchday 5 – Roundup and Results

Last Updated on September 5, 2022 12:38 pm by Erwin Noguera

The matchday 5 of the Italian Serie A has come to an end, and we have the luxury of continuing to enjoy a very nice fight for first place in the standings among several teams that are experiencing a very good start to the season.

The fight for the top is so tight that the difference between first and eighth place is only 3 points, so in one matchday the position of different teams in the standings could change radically.

Napoli continues with its excellent level of play and, after skidding on matchdays 3 and 4, returned to the path of victory and the top of the standings. Milan won the derby against Inter and moved level at the top of the table.

Atalanta remains unstoppable in third place, just 1 point behind first, equal on 10 points with Udinese, who surprised Roma in their last game, and Roma itself.

Finally, Juventus was unable to beat Fiorentina and could only manage a draw to move up to sixth place. With the defeat, Inter dropped to seventh place and Lazio succumbed to Napoli and dropped to eighth place.

As we had predicted in our article on the Italian Serie A matchday 5 previews, the match between Juventus and Fiorentina ended with a 1-1 score.

The start of the fifth matchday of Serie A took us to Florence, where Fiorentina hosted Juventus. The Vecchia Signora was looking as always to make the difference from the start of the match and found it, in this case, through Arkadiusz Milik, who scored the goal for his team in the 9th minute.

Juventus was surprised in the 29th minute with the goal scored by Fiorentina’s Christian Kouamé. This goal left the match level and the second half started, where both teams went for the goal that would give them the victory.

Before the halftime break, la Fiore had a golden opportunity to take the lead, but Juve’s goalkeeper Mattia Perin saved a penalty kick by Luka Jovic.

The second half was a game of formality, neither had any dangerous chances and both settled for a point.

After this result, Juventus is in sixth place in the table, while Fiorentina is in tenth place.

Result: Juventus (1) – (1) Fiorentina

A bittersweet victory for Napoli in this match. After an excellent game, the Neapolitan team came from behind to beat Lazio 1-2 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The three points put them at the top of the table, but the bad news was the injury to Chucky Lozano at the end of the first half.

The match started in the worst possible way for Napoli, who conceded the first goal in the 4th minute thanks to an accurate shot to the bottom right corner of the Napoli goal by Mattia Zaccagni.

From this point on, the opposite of what we might have expected happened. Napoli took control of the match and, with an immense Chucky Lozano, the visitors reached their opponents’ goal with great ease, but were unable to score goals.

From a corner kick in the 38th minute, Korea’s Min-Jae Kim rose from the heart of the box and struck a powerful header that dramatically ended up in the back of the Lazio goal.

The second half was a replica of the first, with Napoli charging at Lazio, while the home side’s defense and goalkeeper held out as long as possible.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had a couple of chances until his goal in the 61st minute with a spectacular shot outside the box gave Napoli the second goal and ultimately the victory.

Thanks to this victory, Napoli climbs back to the top of the standings, while Lazio drops to eighth place.

Result: Napoli (2) – (1) Lazio

Inter took another false step in Serie A with its second defeat at the beginning of the season and fell, in a very painful way, against Milan in the Derby Della Madonnina with the Rossoneri winning with a score of 3-2.

The team coached by Simone Inzaghi suffered a lot despite having started on top in a very good play in which Lautaro Martinez gave a pass to Joaquin Correa to send a tremendous pass to Marcelo Brozovic who scored the goal with class in the 21st minute.

Inter’s joy was short-lived, and 5 minutes later, Milan equalized thanks to a great goal by Portuguese Rafael Leao.

The second half was much more cheerful for Milan, as they were far superior to their opponents. Nine minutes into the second half, the Rossoneri took the lead thanks to a goal scored by Oliver Giroud.

This was a hard blow for Inter, who completely lost their shape on the pitch and, 6 minutes later, they received the definitive blow thanks to the second goal of the night by Portuguese Leao.

Inter tried to react immediately and, in the 67th minute, they reduced the score to 2-3 thanks to Edin Dzeko, but it was not enough and they ended up losing the 3 points in this match.

Result: Inter (2) – (3) Milan
