Undoubtedly, the big surprise of the week, and probably of the season so far, is Cincinnati’s overwhelming 6-1 victory over Inter Miami. Both teams were at the top of the table, fighting for the lead every weekend, so such a big difference is surprising.

It was a night to forget for goalkeeper Drake Callender, who made several mistakes, and the team’s defense, which was very loose and permeable, allowing the opponents to do whatever they wanted. Japan’s Yuya Kubo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Serhiy Kryvtsov equalized in the 21st minute with a header from a corner kick.

Then came Cincinnati’s festival, scoring through Argentine Luciano Acosta and Yamil Asad, and Czech Pavel Bucha to make the score 4-1 before the end of the first half.

In the second part, Kubo and Gerardo Valenzuela appeared to put the score at 6-1 and Sergio Busquets was sent off after being shown two yellow cards in one minute for protesting.

Cincinnati is now the league leader with 48 points, one more than Inter Miami, which lost its first match since Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are in the Copa América, after having won all of them by 2-1.

In the Canadian derby of the week, Montreal and Vancouver Whitecaps drew 1-1 in a result that did neither side much good.

The visitors took the lead with a fine goal from Brian White, who struck first-time with the outside of his foot after a cross from the left by Ryan Gauld. It was the striker’s third consecutive game on the scoresheet, during which time he scored five goals.

The equalizer came in the 79th minute when Uruguay’s Matias Coccaro headed the ball into the center of the net, but goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka’s hands were too soft to keep out the shot.

Montreal is 11th in the Eastern Conference with 23 points, one point behind compatriot Toronto FC, which is in the Wild Card zone, while Vancouver is sixth in the West with 32 points but close to getting out of the playoff spots.

A double from Gyasi Zardes turned the scoreline around to give Austin FC a 2-1 victory over New York City.

The visitors got on the board early, when five minutes in, Andres Perea connected with a cross from Tayvon Gray. However, in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time, Jader Obrian delivered a perfect cross to Zardes, who didn’t have to move or jump to head home to make it 1-1.

In the second half, the U.S. striker made a good run and crossed the ball to make the final score 2-1, which would give the Texans three points and also put them in the wild card zone with 30 units. The New Yorkers are fifth in the Eastern Conference with 35 points.
