Liga MX Matchday 2 – Roundup and Results

The second matchday of the Clausura 2023 Liga MX Tournament has ended, and we have already begun to observe some surprises in this new championship.

We begin with the fact that América, one of the best teams in the league in the previous tournament has managed two draws in two games. On the other hand, Pachuca, the reigning champion of Mexican soccer, was crushed by Tigres UANL. Meanwhile, teams such as Querétaro and Tijuana were not at their best at the start of the season, with the surprise that Cruz Azul is also included in this pack.

On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that Tigres, Atlético San Luis, and Chivas de Guadalajara showed an excellent level in the first two rounds of the tournament, which makes us think that we could have a much closer battle than in the Apertura.

Tigres are still going strong and accumulated their second victory by defeating the current Liga MX champions, Pachuca, 4-1, leaving a good taste in terms of soccer, in a match corresponding to Matchday 2 of the Clausura 2023 Tournament.

The Felines started down on the scoreboard due to an early goal by Pachuca, scored by Javier López at minute 8′. However, before going to the break, they ended up equalizing thanks to Gorriarán’s header at minute 31′.

Tigres showed their offensive power in the second half and constantly began to attack Pachuca’s defense. It was only a matter of minutes before an imminent comeback came at the feet of the feline idol, Gignac.

The Felines came out convinced of turning it around and succeeded with a goal from Gignac (54′) and a brace from Luis Quiñones (79′ and 86′).

Thus, the team coached by Guillermo Almada broke a 6-game unbeaten streak, meeting their true nemesis, Tigres, which was the last team to defeat them, during the quarterfinals of the previous Liguilla.

América and Toluca were held to a draw at 2-2, leaving them with no choice but to share points in this round of the Mexican Clausura.

The match was played at the Nemesio Diez stadium, home of Toluca. The home team took the lead in the 8th minute when Charli González shot in the small area after goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez rejected a mighty thunderbolt from Marcel Ruiz.

América reacted immediately and equalized in the 16th minute with a powerful shot by Brian Rodríguez, sending the ball through the legs of Brazilian goalkeeper Tiago Volpi.

The two teams continued their give-and-take. Seven minutes later, Toluca regained the lead with a beautiful volley by Carlos Orrantia after a cross by Maximiliano Araujo from the left flank.

Toluca slowed down in the second half and gave the ball to América. However, Chilean Claudio Baeza committed a foul in the area, which led to a penalty kick, taken and scored by Henry Martín in minute 76′.

With this fine 2-2 draw, América’s second draw in two matches at the start of the Clausura Tournament puts them in 11th place in the table, while Toluca, playing its first match of the tournament, is in 12th place.

Chivas had everything in their favor to achieve their second win of the Clausura 2023 in Liga MX, but were unable to find clarity and suffered the loss of Alexis Vega against Atlético de San Luis, who grew and tied a match that tasted like a victory, considering that they played with ten men for almost the entire game.

The team coached by Veljko Paunovic could not maintain their winning streak, but they remain undefeated and in third place in the table.

In addition, Guadalajara could not take advantage of the fact that Atlético de San Luis was down to 10 players due to the expulsion of Juan Manuel Sanabria just 16 minutes into the match.

Atlético San Luis was intense and self-sacrificing, especially with Ángel Zaldívar, who multiplied his efforts to close the spaces for the red and white players. In the second half, Veljko Paunovic wanted to change the course of the match and brought on Piojo Alvarado and Eduardo Torres. Still, before the scales could tip, Alexis Vega was injured.
