Santos Laguna achieved last Sunday, February 27, 2022, its first victory in the closing tournament of Liga MX by winning 2-1 as a visitor to Cruz Azul at the end of the seventh day of the tournament.

The victory for Santos’Warriors” came three days after the dismissal of Portuguese manager Pedro Caixinha. After Caixinha’s departure, the club appointed Eduardo Fentanes as interim technical director.

Cruz Azul, which has a good start to the season, left with a lot of confidence playing at home against Santos Laguna; one of the worst teams in this tournament, seeing its position in the general classification table.

The match was a round trip at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City, home of Cruz Azul. However, Santos Laguna gave the surprise to take the lead after five minutes with a powerful shot from Colombian Harold Preciado from outside the area, surprising the goalkeeper Chuy Corona; leaving him without any opportunity to get the ball out, after controlling the ball with great quality with his chest.

Cruz Azul had the opportunity to tie the game at 18 minutes by way of a penalty kick; but goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo stopped the shot and the shot after the rebound from Uriel Antuna. Acevedo saved his goal again in the 28th minute by deflecting a shot from Carlos Rodríguez.

The game continued in the same way, both teams attacking from all sides, with Cruz Azul looking to take advantage of their local status to tie the game. However, they could not do it in the first half and went to rest with the result being 1-0.

Second Half

Cruz Azul did not sit idly by, because after the end of the first half at a disadvantage, from the beginning of the second half they looked for a way to equalize the actions.

The tie came at minute 64 when Ángel Romero sent a pass to the heart of the area. There was Nacho Rivero, who took the opportunity to finish off a header and beat Carlos Acevedo.

At minute 94, Diego Medina had a shot from the edge of the area, which was deflected by a Cruz Azul defender, changing the trajectory of the ball to Jesús Corona. He could not do much; other than watch the ball cross the final line in the last moments of the match.
