Summary of the First Leg

The first leg of the Liga MX Women’s Grand Final was played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, home of Club América. The hosts came into the match with a slight advantage as the top seed but knew they faced a tough test against a talented Monterrey team.

The locals were able to make the most of their home advantage, defeating Rayadas 1-0 in a hard-fought match. The only goal came in the first half from América’s star striker, Kiana Palacios. It was a close duel with a tense atmosphere.

The 1-0 result gave America an advantage heading into the second leg in Monterrey, but they knew the series was still up for grabs. Monterrey would likely have a boisterous home crowd behind them and would be hungry to reverse the deficit. Still, América had to feel good about having a lead to defend on the road.

A BBVA stadium packed with fans

The second leg of the Liga MX Women’s Grand Final took place at BBVA Stadium, home of Monterrey. As expected, Rayadas sold out all available tickets, filling the stadium with over 50,000 roaring fans.

The atmosphere was electric, with the majority of the fans passionately cheering. Chants of “Rayadas” echoed throughout the stadium as the players took the field. That was the largest crowd attendance for a Liga MX Femenil match, demonstrating the growth of support for women’s soccer in Mexico.

Both teams felt the energy of the moment stepping onto the pitch. However, with their 1-0 lead from the first leg, América hoped to appease the home fans by scoring first.

Summary of the second leg of the Grand Final

The visitors got off to a dream start in the second leg thanks to a moment of brilliance from star player Sarah Luebbert. It took just nine minutes for the American to make her mark on the scoreboard with a superb individual effort.

Picking up the ball in midfield, Luebbert drove into the Monterrey box and held off two defenders before firing a low shot over the keeper and into the bottom corner. Her goal put America 2-0 ahead on aggregate and left the home fans in silence.

Then, in the 26th minute, Alyssa Seoposenwe made a perfectly timed run into the America box to level the score 1-1 and put the aggregate score at 1-2. There was still more drama to come, but Seoposenwe’s goal swung the momentum back in Monterrey’s favor when they needed it most.

Drama took over the Final on Rayadas’ last corner kick after Kaci put her hand in the area, and the VAR confirmed the infraction for Rebeca Bernal’s unbeatable shot. As a result, the series was tied, and everything would go to penalties.

The final went to penalties after a 2-2 aggregate score. That brought even more drama and tension to the Liga MX Femenil Grand Final. América’s Karen Luna was the first to miss from the penalty spot. However, Ana Lu Martinez, of the Rayadas, had the opportunity to capitalize but was also unable to convert her penalty.

The penalty shootout came down to America’s Aylin Aviléz, who needed to score to keep her team alive. But she was unable to beat the Rayadas goalkeeper, sending her penalty kick wide of the goal.

In the end, Monterrey defeated America 4-3 in the penalty shootout to be crowned champions of this Clausura MX Fem 2024.
