The Mexican team got its direct ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, after beating El Salvador 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium, on the last date of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, finishing in second place in the octagonal end.
With this victory, Mexico will participate for the seventeenth time in a fair of this nature. It’s important to notice that it has not been absent since the United States 1994.
Mexico changed its lineup in some of its pieces for this game. Although DT Tata Martino announced that he would play with the best he has; he was not going to play with his heart, thinking about those who could be sanctioned at the start of the World Cup if he qualified in this match, as he did.
Martino started Uriel Antuna and Alexis Vega accompanying Raúl Jiménez, seeking to give dynamics to the Mexican offense. In the first half, Mexico controlled the match without difficulty. Uriel Antuna took advantage of the ownership to become the key piece for the Tricolor.
First Half
Winger Antuna opened the scoring of the match at minute 17. A corner kick from the right, charged by Alexis Vega, where defender Néstor Araujo got up in the area to head the ball, but the Salvadoran goalkeeper prevented the fall of his frame with a slap. However, Uriel Antuna took the rebound and shot between the goalkeeper and the post to put the partial 1-0.
The Mexican team wanted to define the match in the first half itself and they succeeded. Once again having as one of the key players at the end of Cruz Azul, Uriel Antuna, who with an overflow reached the bottom line on the right sector with the coverage of defender Ronald González, who with a sweep wanted to strip him of the ball. He ended up committing a foul inside the area, which the referee signaled as a penalty.
With the coldness and experience that characterizes him, Raúl Jiménez scored the second goal of the night from eleven steps.
Second Half
The second half was everything for Mexico, but, having the ball at their feet for almost the entire match, they managed to maintain this 2-0 result without risking what could be their direct qualification to Qatar 2022.
Finally, Mexico achieved its pass, as we all expected for this World Cup, and joined Canada and the United States as the direct qualified for CONCACAF.
