Brasileirão Matchday 30 – Roundup and Results

Matchday 30 of the Brasileirão started on Tuesday, 10/04, with a 2-2 draw between Corinthians and Juventude; and ended yesterday with Botafogo’s victory (2-1) over Avaí, at the Ressacada stadium.

The leader Palmeiras received Coritiba at home and applied a severe rout: 4-0. Gustavo Scarpa, Rony, and Dudu once again made the difference; and the Alviverde team was much superior to its opponent, who is still fighting to escape relegation. Palmeiras now has a 99% chance of winning the league, with just 8 rounds left for the closing of the Brasileirão.

Flamengo and Internacional played an interesting game at Maracanã, but the teams couldn’t take the score from zero. Flamengo attacked a lot, creating the best chances of the match, but the experienced Inter team knew how to defend themselves well and managed to counter-attack Flamengo, bringing a lot of danger to the hosts. After the tie, Internacional remained in the runner-up position and Flamengo remained fifth on the leaderboard.

The most surprising game of the round took place at Antônio Accioly Stadium, between Atlético Goianiense and Fluminense. El Flu, the visiting team, opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the first half. They increased the score with top scorer Cano in the first half, making it look like the match would be easy. But Atlético Goianiense, the home team, and in the fight against relegation, turned the game around and applied a historic 3-2 against its rival. The result still doesn’t take the team out of the zone of the four worst teams in the Brasileirão, but it renews the players’ spirit in the search for permanence in the first division.

Santos received Atlético Mineiro in Vila Belmiro and was not able to stop the good phase of their rivals. Striker Hulk was the big name of the match and scored the goal that opened the scoring for the visitors. Atlético Mineiro started a two-game winning streak, while Santos lost 4 of the last 5 games and dropped to 14th place. Now they know they have to improve quickly, as dropping positions are looking closer. Also, with the Atl Goianense result, is clear that you cannot be overconfident in this battle.

The Brasileirão is in its final stretch and there are still many emotions to come. We’ll stay tuned for the next round to follow the fight for the top positions and the attempts to escape relegation.
