The confrontation between Atlas and Pumas for the Liga MX ended this Sunday, February 20, 2022, with a goalless draw. And, although it might seem that the game was not the best; because the teams did not hurt each other at all; the boys from Atlas continue to score points and defend their crown, while Pumas showed spectacular improvement.
After the spectacular Semifinal played in the previous tournament, Pumas returned to the land of the Champion, Atlas. This time in a Jalisco Stadium that was at 60 percent of its capacity. From the beginning of the game, Pumas knew how to dominate the match even playing in the Atlas’ field. Although it was not reflected in the scoreboard, the adjustments that Andrés Lillini made in his 11 and his strategy were working; even Jerónimo Rodríguez was one of the Pumas players who was causing the most damage to Atlas in the first half. But this absolute dominance was of no use to Pumas since the chances created did not end in goals.
Pumas ended up dominating the first half over an Atlas that didn’t seem to wake up, even playing at home.
Second Half: Atlas (0) vs. Pumas (0)
The game was still without goals and the second half began. Pumas looked better than in other games and was showing a very good level of play, Atlas began to react and on a couple of occasions, it had to be the Pumas goalkeeper, Alfredo Talavera, who would have to put on his cape and be the hero of his team to avoid the goal against.
But Pumas’ alarms went off in the 63rd minute of the game when Nicolás Freire came off injured after preventing Julio Furch from putting Atlas ahead with a goal.
The game continued in the same vein, with Atlas taking control of the ball and the rhythm, while Pumas tried to avoid conceding a goal that would put them against the wall.
With different goal situations created by both teams, placing both goalkeepers as the heroes of their teams, the match ended with a result of 0-0.
Atlas, the current Mexican soccer champion, continues in the battle to reach the top of the table. While Pumas leaves with the concern of not having the leader of its defense available at its highest level and just in a fundamental week because on Wednesday they host Saprissa and on Saturday, America, in two games where they cannot lose.
