The Apertura MX 2024 kickstarted with some surprises in matchday 1. That is not something weird in soccer at all, as the teams are still taking form after a long rest that involved a transfer market. Still, this wasn’t a round characterized by high-scoring matches, as only a couple had 3+ goals involved. We expect the level to rise progressively in the coming months.
The most remarkable result involved the Eagles’ slip at PotosÃ. However, América tends to be a little shaky at the start of the season just to start engines a while later, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Another team that disappointed was Pachuca, as our fears were confirmed. The team has the same aggressive approach as last season but is less effective, something to be expected considering their poor market. We have to wait and see if they can take rhythm in the next weeks or must prepare for another complicated season as in the previous Apertura.
Below, we bring you a summary of what happened in some of the matches on the first day of this Liga MX Apertura 2024 Tournament.

We begin with the first surprise of the tournament, as Atletico San Luis achieved a spectacular victory against América in their debut in the Apertura MX 2024 with a score of 2-1.
The match began with a smile on America’s face, as they managed to take the lead in the 5th minute thanks to Henry Martin’s goal. However, this joy only lasted 2 minutes, as Mateo Klimowicz scored his first goal of the night to level the score in the 7th minute.
After that, America went on the attack and had many opportunities to score their second goal. However, San Luis’ defense and the ineffectiveness of their forwards took their toll. Finally, in the 50th minute, Klimowicz scored the definitive 2-1 to give his team its first victory of the season.

One of the most boring matches at the beginning of the tournament was between Chivas and Toluca, which ended with a 0-0 score after Chivas was unable to take advantage of its home advantage to win.
The match was intense, with both teams trying their best to score the goal that would lead them to victory. However, there were many offensive lapses, and, above all, with a very solid defense on both sides, neither team was able to hurt their opponents.
Chivas had 15 scoring chances with four shots on goal, while Toluca had 11 with only two shots on target. Ball possession was balanced, with 52% for Chivas and 48% for Toluca.
Result: Chivas (0) – (0) Toluca

The current runners-up in Liga MX, Cruz Azul, made their home ground respected in this first match of the Apertura MX 2024 with a 1-0 victory over Mazatlan.
It was a game completely in favor of the home team, who were able to hold Mazatlan at bay for the entire 90 minutes. Although the score ended 1-0, we do not doubt that it could have been much higher, as Cruz Azul had up to 18 scoring chances, with 7 shots on goal and 66% possession of the ball.
On the other hand, Mazatlan had only one shot on goal, demonstrating many offensive deficiencies in this first match of the tournament.
The match was destined to be a scoreless draw, but, in the 90+4 minute, Bryan Gamboa scored 1-0 to give Cruz Azul the victory in this opening round.
Result: Cruz Azul (1) – (0) Mazatlán
Apertura MX 2024: Matchday 1 – Pachuca vs. Monterrey

Finally, we close this summary with the excellent victory of Rayados against the Tuzos with a score of 1-0.
The match was tilted in Pachuca’s favor from start to finish, but theywere unable to translate that dominance into goals, which led them to suffer an unexpected defeat at home.
Pachuca dominated the ball (57% possession) and created 17 scoring chances with 3 shots on goal. However, this was not enough, as Monterrey scored their only goal of the match in the 14th minute through Sergio Canales and, from that moment on, they closed down to defend the score until the end.
The tournament is just beginning, but all the teams know how important it is to win matches in the first few rounds.
Result: Pachuca (0) – (1) Monterrey
