Brasileirão Matchday 35 Roundup

The emotions of the Brasileirão continued, and over the weekend and beginning of this week, we enjoyed some intense duels for matchday 35. Yesterday, we also got two games from matchday 36, played in advance due to the celebration of the Copa Libertadores final between Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro, with the Fogao getting the victory and a healthy advantage in the title race.

Both teams close the season with difficult matches against G-12 teams who are fighting their own battles, with the difference that the Verdão will face Cruzeiro and Fluminense, both in the lower half of the table, and O Fogo will have to face São Paulo and Internacional, the latter of which still has a small chance for the title. It’s fair to say that the title race is far from closed.

Lower in the table, Flamengo’s draw got it ejected from the top four, but they already qualified for the next edition of the CONMEBOL Libertadores after winning the Copa do Brasil, so they will be playing only as a formality.

Finally, the fight for relegation is on fire, with up to nine teams trying to evade the last two spots in the red zone. There are many big and historic clubs involved, including Vasco and Mineiro, who not long ago were calm in the middle of the table but have had a terrible last few weeks.

Botafogo could not display their best version in this match against Vitória and ended up drawing 1-1.

The match was completely tilted in Botafogo’s favor, there is no doubt about that. However, Vitória’s defense managed to do an extraordinary job of containing the attacks and thus came away with a golden point from their visit to Nilton Santos.

It all started very well for the visitors, who took the lead in the 20th minute with a goal by Alerrando. This made Vitória close much more in defense, to defend their score.

After many attempts, 26 scoring chances, and 9 direct shots on goal, Botafogo was able to find a space in Vitória’s defense in minute 87′ and forced an own goal by Wagner Calvelo de Souza. This sealed the match and the teams had to settle for only 1 point.

Palmeiras got closer to Botafogo this matchday, as they achieved an excellent victory against Atlético Goianiense with a score of 1-0.

This score is a little less than expected, considering that Palmeiras is fighting for the top and Atlético GO is in last place. However, the Verdão played badly in this away match.

The home side took possession of the ball and even had some dangerous chances. However, the visitors managed to hold on and, for many, settled for Raphael Veiga’s goal in the 20th minute.

In the end, Palmeiras took these three points, on the eve of their match against Botafogo, where they could not take the victory and are now three points behind the leader.

Result: Atlético Goianiense (0) – (1) Palmeiras

One of the most entertaining matches was between São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro, which took place last Saturday, November 23, and ended with a 2-2 score.

Both teams searched for the victory at all times, butall credit to Atlético Mineiro, who generated only three goal chances, with three direct shots on goal. They also had to play the entire second half with one player down, as Mariano Ferreira Filho was sent off in minute 45+6′.

Things started extremely well for Atlético MG, as they took the lead with goals by Paulinho in minutes 1′ and 18′. However, São Paulo did not lag, as they managed to get closer to the scoreboard six minutes later with an own goal by Fausto Vera. Finally, before the end of the first half, the locals equalized the score 2-2 thanks to André Silva’s goal.

Then, in the second half, São Paulo went all out on the attack, but,Atlético Mineiro’s defense did a phenomenal job and they were able to keep the scoreboard tied even though they had one less player on the field.

Finally, the most interesting match of the day disappointed many, as Fortaleza and Flamengo played to a goalless draw at the Castelão Stadium.

In the 13th minute of the first half, striker Bruno Henrique had a chance to score, but his shot hit the post. Although Flamengo controlled the ball well (62% possession), they lacked the finishing touch to score against Fortaleza.

Alex Sandro was the standout player of the match, with Flamengo’s defender crucially clearing the ball twice in dangerous situations. Goalkeeper João Ricardo also impressed at the Castelão Stadium, making four crucial saves and completing 14 accurate passes.

As a result of this goalless draw, the home team now has 65 points and occupies fourth place, while the away team maintains its position in fifth place with 63 points in the 2024 Brasileirão season.

Result: Fortaleza (0) – (0) Flamengo
