The Wyndham Championship is a professional golf tournament played in North Carolina for the PGA Tour. It is celebrated annually in Greensboro and was originally the Greater Greensboro Open.
Founded 85 years ago in 1938 with the formerly name, it was usually played in April or May, until a schedule change in 2003 moved it toward the end of the season.
When the WGC event expanded to about 80 players in 2002, the field for the Reno–Tahoe Open was reduced to 132 players. With the launch of the FedEx Cup in 2007, the tournament and the WGC event were moved from late to early August. In 2010 the Reno–Tahoe Open was played several weeks earlier, opposite the Open Championship in mid-July.
In 2007, the event was renamed the Wyndham Championship when Wyndham Hotels & Resorts took over from DaimlerChrysler as title sponsor and dropped “Greensboro” from the title.
It moved from an autumn date to mid-August and is the last PGA Tour event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, as one last chance to qualify for the FedEx Cup and retain their tour privileges if not already exempt.
The purse for 2015 was $5.4 million, with a winner’s share of $972,000. The 2021 event featured a six-way playoff for first place, which was won by Kevin Kisner.
This tied the PGA Tour record for the largest number of participants in a sudden-death playoff. This also occurred at the 1994 GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic and the 2001 Nissan Open.
Event Overview – Wyndham Championship 2023 – PGA Golf Tour
This event separates golfers from the postseason as the 2023 Wyndham Championship once again plays caboose to the PGA Tour’s regular season. Slimming the first playoff event’s field from 125 players to just 70, the PGA Tour has forced the hands of veterans and rookies alike hoping to punch their postseason tickets.
Justin Thomas headlines those with aspirations of playing themselves into the field with a strong showing around this Donald Ross design. Thomas is experiencing one of the worst seasons of his career, but a good finish at the Wyndham Championship could flip the script and allow him to qualify for the playoffs.
Shane Lowry and Adam Scott find themselves in the same position despite a handful of solid tournaments throughout the year. In their way are players such as Ben Griffin, who finished fourth in this event last season and ranks 68th in the season-long race.
PGA Tour winner Cam Davis, meanwhile, hopes to keep his momentum rolling after a T10 at the 3M Open to sit 69th while Austin Eckroat assumes the position of bubble boy at No. 70 in the FedEx Cup. Si Woo Kim, Sam Burns, and Denny McCarthy hope to bolster their positioning for the Tour Championship while Russell Henley, Sungjae Im, and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year candidate Eric Cole find themselves narrowly outside the top 30 ahead of the final tournament of the regular season.
