The Cincinnati Masters 1000 is a week before the US Open and is also a hard surface event, awarding 1000 points to the champion and 600 to the runner-up. These points have two big favorites.

Western & Southern Open 2023: Favorites

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz is a great candidate to win on American soil. After his participation in the Masters 1000 in Canada, the 20-year-old is still number 1 in the world. This year he added an important title to his trophy cabinet: Wimbledon, after beating Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, a duel that could be repeated in the new tournament. Alcaraz has proven to be a powerhouse on the hard surface, as he is the reigning US Open champion. As if that wasn’t enough, in 2023 he has already won six titles and has a record of 47-4.

The other big favorite is Djokovic, who is the world No. 2 and this year has won the Australian Open and Roland Garros, in addition to reaching the Wimbledon final. At 38 years of age, the Serb has a record of 33-5 and arrives with rested legs, since he did not participate in the Toronto Masters 1000. ‘Nole’ has won the US Open three times and has also taken the Cincinnati tournament twice, the last time was in 2020.

After Alcaraz and Djokovic, the seeded player is Russian Daniil Medvedev, world number 3 and who has the 2021 US Open and a 2019 Western & Southern Open title on his resume. In that final, he defeated Belgian David Goffin 7-6(3), 6-4. This year he was champion at the Masters 1000 in Miami and Rome and lost at Indian Wells. In major tournaments in 2023, his best role was the Wimbledon semifinals.

Medvedev, 27, has won five titles so far this year, with a record of 46 wins and nine losses.

Next on the list of favorites is Tsitsipas, who was runner-up in the 2022 edition and this year reached the Australian Open final.

The fourth favorite is the Norwegian Casper Ruud, fourth in the world at the age of 24 and who this year was a finalist at Roland Garros. An important point for the European is that he was the finalist of the US Open and in 2023 he reached the semifinals in Rome, although this tournament was on clay.

Other names to follow are the Danish Holgar Rune, the Russian Andrey Rublev, and the Italian Jack Sinner.

The most prominent locals are Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. Fritz was ranked fifth in the world this year but is currently down to ninth in the ATP rankings. On the other hand, Tiafoe is ranked tenth in the world and his record in 2023 is 32-12, with two titles.

Finally, we must talk about Borna Coric, number 15 of the ATP and who will seek to revalidate his surprising title in 2022. This season he has a record of 18-15.

In this edition, the Americans John Isner, Mackenzie McDonald, Brandon Nakashima, and the Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka will enter by wild card.
