Sanderson Farms Championship

The PGA Tour schedule resumes this week after an exciting Ryder Cup with the Sanderson Farms Championship. Sergio Garcia will try to win back-to-back events at the Country Club of Jackson. However, he will have plenty of competition this year as well as facing the difficulty of returning to an event a week after an incredibly emotional Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

It’s not the greatest course, but Sanderson is positioned as a tough competition. If it wasn’t for Garcia winning last year, it’s doubtful any of the players on any of the Ryder Cup teams would have made the cut. Still, there is some extremely good young talent in players like Will ZalatorisMatthew Wolff, and Sam Burns. All three could be on the next Ryder Cup team when the event goes to Rome in 2023. Corey ConnersKeegan Bradley, and Sungjae Im will also play this week.

What can we expect at the Sanderson Farms Championship?

Sergio Garcia‘s victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship last year broke some tournament trends, but mostly it was a demonstration that when an elite golfer plays elite golf on a course that features very few of them, he’s going to win or nearly win. In the end, Garcia nearly had his pocket picked by an attacking Peter Malnati, only to produce a sumptuous approach to the last and birdie to win by one. That 18th hole represented the tournament and perhaps even the sport in microcosm: flusher beats putter.

However, it’s the putters who have generally ruled here. This is since Nick Taylor won the first edition to be played at Jackson Country Club. He placed seventh inputting, Malnati and Cody Gribble led the field, Ryan Armor and Cameron Champ were second, Sebastian Munoz sixth. Garcia, who gained more than 12 strokes with his ball-striking, could afford to languish in 28th place. That will put a better-than-average standard in terms of the field, but well below him against previous champions.

The other established norm here in Mississippi has been that first-time winners emerge. That has nothing to do with the course and everything to do with assembled fields full of Korn Ferry Tour graduates and others who don’t dine at the top table. Garcia’s victory came during the only season that began without a new class. On the other hand, surely none would have beaten him anyway, there were fewer contenders.

Runner-up Malnati is a former winner here and only Kris Ventura and Cameron Davis entered Sunday as possible champions who were maidens at the time.

Sanderson Farms Championship Betting Analysis

Keegan Bradley reminds us a lot of Sergio Garcia when he came into this event last year. Sergio had a great season the year before but hadn’t been able to put it all together for a win. Keegan Bradley is in a similar situation this season. While he may have been overlooked due to his lack of a win, it was one of Bradley‘s best seasons in recent memory, so we believe in a Bradley victory.
