BMW Championship 2023

The best golfers in the world will meet on the third date of the PGA Tour Playoffs, when the BMW Championship 2023 will be played on August 17 at Olympia Fields, in Illinois, the United States.

The last two editions of the tournament have had the same winner: the American Patrick Cantlay, who in 2021 achieved a record of -27 under par and in 2022 had a score of -14 under par.

Being among the 70 best in the world, Cantlay, 11 in the FedExCup Points PGA Tour in 2023, will be able to defend his trophy for the third time, something that does not seem easy because of the quality of the rivals he will have in front of him.

BMW Championship 2023 Favorites

The historic Rory McIlroy arrives as the great favorite of the tournament. The Northern Irishman is one of the greatest legends of the sport, winning this year’s Genesis Scottish Open in July, beating Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre with -15 over par.

He also won the BMW Championship in 2012, defeating the historic Phil Mickelson and the Englishman Lee Westwood, with a score of 268. In his resume, the 34-year-old Northern Irishman has won the PGA Tournament twice, the US Open once and The Open Championship once.

Scottie Scheffler is second on the list of candidates. The American has had a fantastic year, winning the WM Phoenix Open, beating Canadian Nick Taylor, and The Player Championship, beating Englishman Tyrrell Hatton. In addition, Scheffler had a great year in the majors, despite not being champion. He was top 10 in the Masters Tournament, second in the PGA Championship, third in the US Open, and 23rd in The Open Championship.

As a curious fact, this year the American joined a select group with his compatriots Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, as the only ones to win the Masters Tournament and The Players Championship in 12 months.

Completing the podium of favorites is the Spaniard Jon Rahm, one of the best golfers in the world and the leader of the ranking with 3117 points, winning four trophies and finishing nine times in the top 10 in 2023. This year he won the Tournament of Champions, The American Express, the Los Angeles Open, and the Masters at Augusta. The last one is, by far the most important of all.

He became the fourth golfer from his country to achieve this title, after Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, and Sergio García Fernández. In 2023 the Iberian was also in the top 10 of the US Open and finished in the top 50 of the PGA Tournament.

The current two-time tournament champion, Patrick Cantlay, is fourth on the list of candidates. Meanwhile, the young Norwegian Viktor Hovland is fifth. Hovland, a professional since 2019, has finished in the top 10 of the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship, so he is hoping for his first major win of the year. So far in 2023, he has won the Memorial Tournament.

Despite not being among the top-5 candidates, golfers Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, and Ricky Fowler should be taken into account.

Homa this year won the Farmers Insurance Open, with six under par, beating Keegan Bradley. Also, he is coming off a top-10 finish at The Open Championship.

Then comes the turn of Clark, this year’s US Open champion, defeating the historic Rory Mcllroy.

For his part, Ricky Fowler, 34, already won this year the Rocket Mortgage Classic, defeating Canadian Adam Hadwin and American Collin Morikawa.
