This weekend, we will have a new show of maximum speed in Formula 1 with the Hungarian GP, which takes place at the Hungaroring racetrack in Mogyoród, near Budapest.
This will be the 39th edition of a grand prix that was run for the first time in 1936 at the Népliget circuit. With the beginning of the Second World War, it was stopped and not resumed until 1986, already at Hungaroring. Since then, it has been repeated at the same venue every year.
The circuit has a length of 4,381 meters, and the drivers drive for 70 laps, i.e. a total of 306,630 meters. Max Verstappen was the winner the last two years. However, Lewis Hamilton is the greatest winner of this Grand Prix having conquered it eight times.

2024 Hungarian GP Top Contenders
Formula 1 lovers are excited. At the last Grand Prix, at Silverstone, we saw the most incredible race of the season. The rain was the main protagonist, and it had an epic ending with Lewis Hamilton coming back to win after a long time and doing it at home. There is no doubt that the second half of the championship promises to be exciting.
Max Verstappen is still leading the championship and 84 points ahead of Lando Norris, but he is not happy. He finished second in Great Britain, and it is already two consecutive races where he has not won, something that had not happened since mid-2022, exactly in the same races but in the opposite order, since back then, he finished seventh at Silverstone and then was second in Austria.
Now the Dutchman will go full fury to try to get the first place again. Despite the number of points, not winning would be a hard blow for Red Bull, which would show how the RB20’s problems have not been solved and could put the team’s hegemony in doubt.
Second on this list is Lewis Hamilton. The Briton won a race again after 945 days and proved that he could make gold with very little. Luck or not, Mercedes has benefited from different factors in the last races and already has two victories in a row with its two drivers. In addition, the Hungarian track makes it very difficult to overtake cars, so the strategy will be the most important thing, and there the engineers have to repeat what they did two weeks ago.
Hamilton is also the driver who has won this Grand Prix the most times, a total of eight, the last one in 2020. He has another record, and that is to be the only one to win this race for three consecutive years, so he will try that Max is not the winner and equals this record.
Finally, we have to include Lando Norris. The Briton already won his first race in 2024 and McLaren is having a very good year, fighting for second place with Ferrari. The MCL38 has proven to be faster than the Red Bull on several occasions.
Only in one race this year he failed to score points and that was because of his accident in Austria with Verstappen that forced him to retire the car. He comes from third at Silverstone, and if he wants to keep dreaming about the title at the end of the season, he must start scoring more points than Max to close the gap.
McLaren, with 11 victories, is the winningest team in this race, although the last time it reached the top of the podium was in 2012 with Hamilton.
2024 Hungarian GP Outside picks
Carlos Sainz Jr doesn’t have a guaranteed seat for 2025, and that might motivate him to give more. Ferrari already chose Charles Leclerc over him, and the Spaniard wants to prove them wrong. With one race less than the Monegasque, he is only four points behind Charles, and he comes from beating his teammate in the last two races. Sainz took third and fifth place in Austria and Great Britain, while Leclerc was 11th and 14th.
McLaren’s other driver, Oscar Piastri, may also be in the running. He already scored two podiums in 2024 and is ready, as well as his teammate did, to win his first race. The Australian must take advantage of the great momentum of the MCL38 before Red Bull overtakes them again.
Finally, George Russell. He already won in Austria a few weeks ago, and Mercedes has shown signs of improvement, something very important, especially for Russell, who is the driver to stay next year.
